Things that I feel we must be mindful of are...

edited November 2010 in Buddhism Today
I think there's many things we need to be mindful of in everyday life.

What are some things you think we neglect to pay attention to in everyday life?

    Hi,

I think we neglect to pay attention to the fact that our minds are constantly spinning around in conceptual proliferation. (papanca)

    Kind regards,

This wonderful gatha by the 6th Ch'an Patriarch Huieng gives good pointers on what we should be mindful about:

To have unobstructed speech and an unobstructed mind
    Is like the sun in the open sky;
Only transmit the teaching of seeing intrinsic nature,
It apperas in the world to destroy wrong teachigns.

    In the Dharma there is no sudden or gradual;
In delusion and awakening there is slow and fast.
This teaching of seeing one's nature
Cannot be known by ignorant people.

Though there are ten thousand ways to say it
Their principles combine and return to one:
Within the dark abode of affliction
Constantly give rise to the sun of wisdom.

When wrong thoughts arise, afflictions arrive.
When right thoughts arise, afflictions are removed.
When neither right nor wrong are used,
Such purity reaches nirvana without remainder.

Bodhi is inherent to our intrinsic nature,
    The arising mind is illusory.
The pure mind is wihtin illusion.
This right mind is without the three obstructions.

All people who practice the way,
    Unobstructed by any teachings,
    Constantly relfect upon their faults
And are in accordance with the way.

Every form of being has its own way-
They do not hinder one another.
To turn away from this way to seek another
Is to spend a lifetime without finding the way.

Passing through life busy and agitated
Leaves one with regret in the end
For one who wishes to see the true way,
Right conduct is itself the way.

One who does not have a mind inclinded towards the way
Walks in darkness and cannot see the way.
But one who is a true practitioner
Does not see the wrongs of the world

If I see the wrongs of others,
My own wrongs are already present.
Others may have wrongs, but I have no wrongs.
If I am wrong it is my mistake.

    Your own mind is wrong
    Remove all afflictions.
    Being beyond love and hatred,
Stretch out both legs and rest.

One who wishes to teach others
    Must have skillful means.
Do not allow them to have doubts,
Their own intrinsic nature will then appear.
The Dharma is within the world,
Apart from this world there is no awakening.
Seeking bodhi apart from the world
Is like looking for a rabbit's horn.

    Right view transcends the world.
Wrong view is of this world.
    Removing both wrong and right,
    Bodhi nature clearly appears.

The teachings of the sudden school are within this gatha,
It is also known as the Great Dharma Vessel.
The deluded may hear it for many kalpas
But awaken in a split second.

Health. Really. We take it completely for granted. It's the most basic thing in our world - to be relatively healthy - and we take it for granted. I've become very humble towards the importance of personal health the last few years, since I've been having some health issues. You feel in so much psychological and physiological pain and you are having the problems....and when they are gone you don't think of health for one second even.

I have two arms, two legs etc...and I'm relatively healthy and I'm grateful for it.
