Some good reads?/Boring Introduction

edited November 2010 in Buddhism Basics
Hello, I'm fifteen and I guess you could say I have been Buddhist for about two days :p

I come from a Agnostic/Atheist/Jewish family, so it's not like the transition is very hard or anything like that.

Anyways, I doubt I can find a very close Buddhist Temple here in the Dallas area (can't drive yet.) So I figured I would go online to talk to other Buddhists.

I have been reading one of my dads books titled Buddhism (creative, huh?) and it's great and all but some of it is confusing for me (diction, etc), are there any good, easy to read translations of the Dhammapada I could order?

Any links, tips, etc are very appreciated ;)

An online pdf called Mindfulness in plain English by [FONT=Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif]Ven. Henepola Gunaratana is available. google it and it should be listed first.
Also a site called Dharmanet has many resources. Buddhism for Dummies and the Idiots guide to Buddhism really helped me

    Hope this helps

Sometimes Buddhism is learned in a less-direct manner. Such as sitting down and listening to a master.

When you cannot do this in person, one can read a book that is written in a conversational tone. Easy to read, with insightful gems here and there, and conveying the attitudes (rather than specific information), I recommend:

Good Life Good Death by Gehlek Rimpoche. You might be able to order at a local bookstore, and it is paperback so not as expensive.

buddhanet.net and pathofdhamma.net have translations of the dhammapada online for free. It's not something I would order, but that's me.

And the book i'm reading that you asked about in the other thread is "the essential dalai lama"

So there are a few centers in Dallas, so you could always catch a bus if need be.

Anyway, here is a really good site: http://buddhanet.net/
Below the large picture of the buddha, there are 5 pictures, with links. One of them says "buddhist eLibrary". This is a really good site to get some FREE buddhist books and introduction/ ideas etc. I would scroll through these for some reads. The "Buddhism in a Nutshell" one is quite good. I would check out some others there as well.

    Also: http://buddhanet.net/e-learning/index.htm
This part of the website is really cool basic, intro to buddhism stuff, as well as some more in-depth intermediate studies as you begin to grasp the basic concepts.

To watch some discussions on buddhism, this youtube channel is really nice: http://www.youtube.com/user/BuddhistSocietyWA

Hope you enjoy your Journey into Buddhism. I am 17, and have only been practicing for a year now... and kinda lost focus for a few months recently. XD Anyway, hope to see you around the site.

    Namaste,
    Ashley
