Stress weakens immune system. But buddhism itself is sometimes stressful if you are forcing change so fast and all the effort so yes buddhists get colds. I don't know if viruses are effected by the immune system anyhow.

Washing your hands, getting adequate sleep, and eating nourishing foods is more effective.

    True,

and when H.H. The Dalai Lama had Gall stones he went to the hospital.

Although it is true that stress can affect our imune response, germ theroy is better.

    With Metta,
According to Buddha Sakyamuni, one of the allowable offering for the sangha is medical treatment, and from this understanding, it is normal for practitioners to be infected with illness, needless to mention, minor sickness such as cold, fever. Living a healthy lifestyle through proper way of meditation and healthy foods, gradually, illness like cold, even if there is, will recover within a day.

    Well that's a topic I haven't seen before!

A sensible diet (with vitamin C in it) and lifestyle - and hygiene (particularly hand washing) will help to prevent colds.

Drink plenty of warm/hot fluids and get some sleep if you've got a cold.

I hear some may think such can be bought on by ones inner winds being out of tune, If one keeps their minds attund to virtue and conduct in such way negativity has a hard time ripening if there is no cause.
Of course antibiotics are just as good. :)

I wonder if meditation would help clean out ones nose?

LOL, Leon man hahah.. that's some funny stuff.

Buddhism deals with the suffering over the stuff that happens here. So meditating helps with that. Obviously you should still be intelligent and deal with medical problems with medical treatments lol.. Or just blow your nose lol.. That's why we have medicine, science and a brain.

    Lol!
What I meant by "blowing the nose comment," was cleaning out ones nose before meditating, so then one can breathe easier. Was wondering if it could be done naturally instead of un-naturally. As I know medication usually messes one up.

stress really can have a negative effect on the immune system. a friend of mine recently developed shingles due to too much stress/not enough sleep. he's only like 40 or something and does not have any immune disorders. in case you don't know, shingles is the chicken pox virus. when we get chicken pox as a kid, it stays with us and our body is always fighting it, however, sometimes when we get older or our immune system becomes compromised, it can affect us again and at this point, it's really nasty.

    never underestimate stress.

but also, make sure you get enough sleep, vitamin C, and B vitamins.

Washing your hands, getting adequate sleep, and eating nourishing foods is more effective.
What kind of food do you suggest?
Food with high antioxidant value (fruits, green leafy vegetables like spinach and kale, colorful vegetables like red and yellow peppers, carrots, and chard) and anti-inflammatory properties (ginger, garlic, spices, green and white tea), with a good balance of proteins, healthy fats, and carbohydrates.

garlic is actually an anti-bacterial, anti-viral, and anti-fungal. whenever i'm sick, i always increase my garlic intake as well as take supplements.
  • Hello.

This year meditating i only have a cold once, and it was when i stop meditation for a week. Maybe was luck, maybe it is my first supernatural power haha :)
  • I use a neti pot (salt water rinse) and it helps a lot with stuffiness, regardless of the cause. It doesn't prevent colds but it does make sleep, meditation and a lot of things easier.

My yoga teacher said neti pots can prevent colds. Just puttin that out there.
  • shanyinshanyin Novice Yogin Sault Ontario Veteran
Actually I'm like 60% sure he said that.
  • I have heard the same thing, shanyin. I believe the neti pot may help prevent colds but I still get them occasionally. I've got kids in school and some stress in my life, don't always sleep as much as I should, etc..., so there are a lot of factors. But the neti pot definitely helps me sleep better when I have a cold, so I probably recover faster by using it.
  • I think we're supposed to embrace colds more than prevent them. Sickness, old age and death-- if not for those three, there would be no Buddhism in the first place.

On a practical side, the most effective way I've found is washing my hands. When I started doing that every time I came in contact with a surface others have touched, the frequency of my colds decreased considerably. I also do things like using a paper towel to open public bathroom doors and am otherwise conscious of what I'm touching.
