sleeping while sitting up right in chair, question

edited December 2010 in Buddhism Basics
Any of you guys done ,tried or thought of doing this? Elderly people seem to be masters of this :o). Any thoughts about it? I going to try it tonight after I'm done posting this thread. And will post about it tomorrow. I'm well aware that I will have to be quite lax and comfortable in my upright position so as to not wake up really cramped up lol. And I'm not even sure I will be able to stick it out the whole night I've worked on it a couple of times during the day and end up leaning over into the fetal position lol. But its my bed time and my mind and body are well aware that this is its regular time of deep sleep so hopefully that will help me push a full eight hours. I expect to be some what lucid during this as even while going into sleep lying down I remain lucid for a good amount out the first moments of sleep and then later into it until I just loose it and then start becoming lucid right before I'm about to wake from my sleep. So yea I'm out into slumber land maybe ill have something interesting to share about it tomorrow.

Good night.

Thought this was going to be a question/issue about meditation, but how does trying to figure out how to go to sleep in a chair fit in with "Buddhism for Beginners?" :) Think you meant to post in "General Banter" (lol).

As to any special method/way of sleeping in a chair, I can't think of any. I've meditated sitting in a chair, even on a bed, but was always concerned with remaining awake... specifically not falling asleep.

I would think that sleeping sitting upright would cause difficulties with meditation sitting upright. I also agree that this question belongs in the General Banter section because I don't see anything related to Buddhism in the question.

I've heard stories about some lamas constructing meditation boxes for themselves so that they can meditate 24/7. but i have a feeling i would just fall out of it if I tried to use it.

My whole idea of going into sleep while sitting upright was to see how focused I could remain through out the whole thing. The first few moments I was alert as usual and started to feel quite frightened lol. I had to physically open my eyes more than once because it was really getting to me. It helped me realize that what ever the fear was I should further look into it. Once I opened my eyes it helped me realize that it was sort of ridiculous to be freighted about sitting in the dark in my own living room. And it helped bring closure to see the real time inanimate nature of things ( a dark empty living room with nothing but furniture surrounding me) further helped me realize its all in my head.

After I came to some amends with the first part. I dose off into sleep and found my self leaning over more and more and sometimes picking my self up right back into the upright position. Overall I remained in the chair all night and woke up seated.

I liked it and will try again soon enough. Next time in a more rigid chair than a plush leather sofa.

The only thing you're going to get out of trying to stay focused during sleep is a complete lack of the kind of REM deep sleep your body requires to rejuvenate itself every day. Not a good idea from a medical standpoint. The elderly often do it because they have obstructive pulmonary disease and they can't breathe if they're lying down. Or if they're so sleepy that they simply don't have the energy to get up and go to bed. You will always sleep better lying down than sitting up. That's why it's natural for us to do so.
