Forms & Philosphies

edited December 2010 in Buddhism Basics
Hi There,

Can anyone point me to a site or resource that describes the unique differences in the forms of Buddhism? I know that each relies more heavily on certain texts and has developed it's own traditions (or at least I think I know that but am I right?) but I'm not sure where the similarities end and the differences begin.

In particular I'm interested in what sets Zen Buddhism off from the other traditional approaches.

Sorry if this has been covered before, I did try the search feature but came up with nothing.

Buddhism: it's essence and development seems like a good book.

There's quite the list here that could help with your research too.

Thanks, Guys. Those are some helpful lists and descriptions. So, the root of all forms of Buddhism are the same but each places it's own emphasis on specific aspects, texts and practices? Is that an accurate summary? So, all sects believe in the Four Golden Truths and The Eightfold Path, correct?

Thanks for helping me with this. I'm not that concerned with the differences but as I explore Buddhism I read about these divisions and yet find it hard to determine what the real differences are.

If anyone else can share other ideas, thoughts, etc. please do.

That's about right, yes. Each of them go about things their own way, and naturally each thinks their way is best... but their way is best only for an individual who practices them best! :)
