A Hardcore buddhist song?

edited December 2005 in Buddhism Today
I was listening to a song the other day, which I hadn't heard in ages.... before I started looking at buddhism anyway. And when I listened to the song, it kinda spoke to me about buddhism.

Look for yourselves at the Lyrics -
Papa Roach - Between Angels and Insects
There’s no money there’s no possessions
Only obsession I don’t need that shit
Take my money take my obsession

I just want to be heard loud and clear are my words
Coming from within man tell them what you heard
It’s about a revolution in your heart and in your mind
Till you find a conclusion lost out in obsession
Diamond rings get you nothing but a life long lesson
And your pocketbooks stressing
You’re a slave to the system working jobs that you hate for that shit you don’t need
It’s too bad the world is based on greed
Step back and see
Stop thinking about yourself start thinking about

There’s no money there’s no possession only
Obsession I don’t need that shit
Take my money take my possession take my obsession
I don’t need that shit

Because everything is nothing
And emptiness isn’t everything
This reality is really just a fucked up dream
With the flesh and the blood that you call your soul
Flip it inside out it’s a big black hole
Take your money burn it up like an asteroid
Possession though you’re never gonna feel the void
Take it away and learn your best lesson
The heart the soul the life the passion

There’s no money there’s no possession
Only obsession I don’t need that shit
Take my money take my possession take my obsession
I don’t need that shit

Money possession obsession
Present yourself press your clothes comb your hair
And clock in
You just can’t win just can’t win
And the things you own own you
Nooooooooooooo

Take my money take my possession take my obsession
I don’t need that shit
Fuck your money fuck your possession fuck your
Obsession I don’t need that shit
Money possession obsession I don’t need that shit

And okay... there's a bit of swearing and stuff, but if you look at it, you can see it's talking about attatchment to material things bringing no happiness

    Innervision

    by System of a Down

    Well I have a home
    Longing to roam
    I have to find you
    I have to meet you

    Signs of your face
    Slowing your pace
    I need your guidance
    I need to seek my

    Innervision(x2)

    My pupils dance
    Lost in a trance
    Your sacred silence
    Losing all violence
    Stars in their place
    Mirror your face
    I need to find you
    I need to seek my

    Innervision (x3)

It's never too late to re-invent the bicycle
    A smile brings forth energy
    Your life giving you force

    Vision

There's only one true path in life
The road that leads to all leads to one

There's only one true path in life
The road that leads to our hearts

    Vision
    Innervision

    Your sacred silence
    Losing all violence

Ok, this song has NOTHING to do with Buddhism, and yet its chorus is the epitome of the Buddha's teachings:

"Get up you're asleep at the wheel
Get up you're asleep at the wheel
Get up you're asleep at the wheel"

    - Asleep At The Wheel by the Bloodhound Gang

This song has nothing to do with Buddhism either:

    My Ding-A-Ling - Chuck Berry

When I was a little biddy boy
My grandmother bought me a cute little toy
Silver bells hanging on a string
She told me it was my ding-a-ling-a-ling

My Ding-A-Ling My Ding-A-Ling I want you to play with My Ding-A-Ling
My Ding-A-Ling My Ding-A-Ling I want you to play with My Ding-A-Ling

Then mama took me to Grammar school
But I stopped off in the Besta Beau
    Evertime that bell would ring
Catch me playing with my ding-a-ling

Once I was climbing the garden wall,
I slipped and had a terrible fall
I fell so hard I heard birds ring,
But held on to My ding-a-ling

Once I was swimming cross turtle creek
Man them snappers all around my feet
Sure was hard swimming cross that thing
with both hands holding my ding-a-ling

This here song it ain't so sad
The cutest little song you ever had
Those of you who will not sing
You must be playing with your own Ding-a-ling

There are also the lyrics from the band Yes and their album Tales Of Topographic Oceans that dealt with things like

    Shrutis
    Suritis
    Puranas and
    Tantras

But, who knows what their lyrics mean. Plus, you have to be a hardcore Yes fan (which I am) to even listen to this album.

Stop with the name calling, dear.

Or I might just have to swap a vowel...

Talking of song lyrics, I just found an interesting site discussing Lennon's 'I am the Walrus' (1967) in which he states that the only line with any true coherent meaning, is the first one. Otherwise, he has the same opinion of this song that Robbie Williams has of Rock DJ. It's just a pile of bulls.....
swap the vowel at your peril...... ;)

    DEDICATION OF MERIT
    by Loreena McKennitt

May every living being our minds as one and radiant with light,
share the fruits of peace with hearts of goodness, luminous and bright.
If people hear and see how hands and hearts can find, in giving unity,
may their minds awake to Great Compassion, Wisdom, and to Joy.

May kindness find reward, may all who sorrow leave their grief and pain.
May this boundless light break the darkness of their endless night.
Because our hearts are one, this world of pain turns into Paradise.
May all become compasionate and wise; may all become compassionate and wise.

    Peace!

    One Dying Wish
    saetia

because it cuts so deep to see myself
    wishing upon melted stars
I cut the cord I finally give in...
beyond visions of wretched smiles and
    the dread that they've befriended.
I have seen an end to you and I
    (when did "we" begin)
and a warped sense of being that I embrace must exist and we with whole
    hearts yet broken words.
We dream of wisdom but I yearn only for you.
You will destroy me with words that you have never spoken...
I've drawn a picture of us twisted within,
yet below this world I absorb life from portraits.
as long as we remain abreast of one another we will never meet each other.
As long as we whisper to one another we will never fully hear each other.
As long as my eyelids are weighed down by desire and one dying wish.
I will never know when you appear.

Palzang, is that even a hardcore song? this song I jsut typed out is probably about a girl, but it address the issue of attachment.

    love peace and chicken grease

I don't know, depends on what you mean by "hardcore". You have to remember that you're dealing with a moldy oldie here who may not be using the same terminology set you are. However, the song I posted is about as hardcore Buddhist as I can imagine! But then, what do I know?

And anyway, I don't really give a flying monkey's behind if it is "hardcore" or not. It's just a song I like, so take it or leave it.

    Nuff sed.

As I am even more ancient than Palzang, "hard core" makes me thing of apples, and apples make me think of "Get Back" by The Beatles:
Jojo was a man who thought he was a loner
But he knew it wouldn’t last.
Jojo left his home in tucson, arizona
    For some california grass.
    Get back, get back.
Get back to where you once belonged
    Get back, get back.
Get back to where you once belonged.
    Get back jojo. go home
    Get back, get back.
Back to where you once belonged
    Get back, get back.
Back to where you once belonged.
    Get back jo.

Sweet loretta martin thought she was a woman
    But she was another man
All the girls around her say she’s got it coming
But she gets it while she can
    Get back, get back.
Get back to where you once belonged
    Get back, get back.
Get back to where you once belonged.
    Get back loretta. go home
    Get back, get back.
Get back to where you once belonged
    Get back, get back.
Get back to where you once belonged.
    Get back loretta
    Your mother’s waiting for you
    Wearing her high-heel shoes
    And her low-neck sweater
    Get on home loretta
    Get back, get back.
Get back to where you once belonged.

Who cares if the song is hardcore or not, I didn't start this thread to show people the song beacuase it was hardcore, but because I thought it made a couple of connections with buddhism!

Yes, Dave, but you forget how Monkey-minded we are here. We just hop from one metaphorical tree to the next.

I thought we had a moderator that was supposed to keep things on track - but those two are probably involved in slap and tickle all day long. Wink. Wink. Nudge. Nudge. KnowhatImean? KnowwhatImean? Say no more. Say no more.
