A single rebirth thread?

There are a lot of rebirth threads going on now. There will be disarrangements, repetitions, pastings(in many senses!) and all manner of hullaballooooo. And then probably the thread will get closed.

Can I make a suggestion to the Moderators. Can we have one single thread for all the rebirth stuff?

Then we can refer to it, refer people to it etc It could save lots of hassle for all whilst still allowing us to discuss this topic that so many seem to want to discuss.

Does this seem a good idea?

  • I would agree if it were a closed ended question (somewhat). Like 'which sutras mention rebirth'. In that case there is a beginning middle and end. To refer to.

But I find the rebirth threads are sort of people expressing themselves. They have no need to crossreference themselves because its all opinion. The accounts of people remembering past lives are unprovable as crystal love sending.

If we had one rebirth sticky it wouldn't matter because if we are on post 1000 nobody is going to refer back to post 163.

Plus you can't really stop people from starting new threads about rebirth, or making threads about threads about rebirth, etc.

I was kind of thinking the same thing about the "Hey look everbody! I'm enlightened!" threads....the only problem is, OPs generally tend to come back a short while later with any given varation of, "oops, sorry, hang on, no I'm not... :o ..."

I think those kind of threads should only be allowed if accompanied by a video of the poster performing at least 2 miracles!:P

    Happy New Year New Buddhists!!!

  • maybe we can focus on two questions
    how do you define rebirth?
where is that definition supported in dharma?

    been there, done them....
    Still inconclusive, by and large....
  • I've noticed that some of the rebirth threads have different trajectories and focuses. My thread, which was intended to more or less poll members, morphed into a discussion of whether or not rebirth is a documentable teaching of the Buddha; I'm reluctant to interrupt that and make them move it to its own thread, because I think it's constructive. I've never seen a focus on examining source material with regard to rebirth before. I think if topic rebirth were restricted to just one thread, it would meander all over the place. But I like Jeffrey's suggestion that the topic headings could be more specific, so that each rebirth thread would have a clearly stated narrow focus within the broader topic.
  • Thats a good idea Dakini. It almost documents for reference what the thread is about. Although I think sometimes the topic would have to be broad eg... 'whats the deal with rebirth...am I a buddhist?'. That one would definitely not be focused :)

But I was just thinking logically and critically but I like how you found a constructive application.
