How is Buddhism different than Confucianism when it comes to dealing with emotions like sadness?

I don't think they do differ too much.

Confucius says you cannot prevent the birds of sadness from passing over your head, but you can prevent them from making nests in your hair.

So... don't dwell on it, don't let it get to you. Change your mood.

Ajahn Brahm, I Buddhist monk, says you get to choose whether or not your happy. Its normal to be sad, but all you gotta do is change your thinking.
