'Inception' - movie

edited January 2011 in Buddhism Today
Anyone else seen "Inception" the movie? I wasn't keen on the movie first time round, but I saw it on DVD again last night and really enjoyed it. It's all about dreams and dream realities. Quite a bit of violence in it but violence was not condoned IMHO, although the hero is rather amoral (he just wants to get back to his family but doesn't care how he does it, which is an attitude criticised by other characters).

It had a bit of an enviromentalist theme too.

The DVD included a documentary about dreaming and they briefly touched on Tibetan Dream Yoga and lucid dreaming. I found it fascinating.

A lot of Buddhists I know are pacifists who get very unhappy at the sight of violence - even if it is fictional. If you don't have a problem with fictional violence, that's fine, but if you did, well, you have been warned :)
  • I loved it.
  • I don't like violence, but artistic portrayal of violence, sure why not.

I loved the movie and the iPhone app (if you own an iPhone, I suggest you go to the app store now and pick it up..it's free!) :)
  • "artistic portrayal of violence"? What's the point? Doesn't the ubiquity of violent images tend to desensitize people to the real thing?

That's one theory. Another theory (by Bruno Bettelheim) claims that violence in movies and video games lets "the steam off", making the viewer/player calmer in everyday life.
I often think how paradoxical it is, that we live in such a peaceful world (compared to how it was just a hundred years ago) and yet movies and recently video games are blamed for the last remnants of violence.
  • People choose to focus on the negativity, thanks in part to the media and it's portrayal of only the negative aspects of society as if it's all that exists.
