Metta meditation

edited January 2011 in Meditation
In trying to answer a question about developing compassion, I came across this very helpful website on metta meditation. It is a more "formal" technique than I've been taught, but excellent for keeping the concentration I feel. The recitation resembles the blessing we always recite at the end of every meditation session, directed at all sentient beings. I hadn't considered using it as a kind of chant though. I think I will print it out and share it with my teacher.

There's an excellent section at Buddhanet about loving-kindness (metta) meditation which includes, instructions, cultivation, the Four Sublime States, Bramavihara, a loving-kindness audio, and loving-kindness for children.

  • That's the way I practice metta. I like to do samatha one day and metta the following, switching like that :)
  • What I do is I repeat the phrase "May (person) live happily and safely, in health and with ease" sort of like a mantra. I'm pretty sure it's worked for me because over the span of 2 days and as many metta bhavanas, I had my difficult person apologize for bullying me, and my neutral person go from neutral to friendly.
  • @steadyblue That's brilliant! Keep it up!
