Theravadin Bodhisattvas?

I understand that the bodhisattva, or rather bodhisatta, vow is a rarely taken but perfectly acceptable Theravadin ideal. I was wondering if anyone could help give me the full scope of this and especially any suttas that have apparently inspired this ideal.

A good place to start is The Ten Perfections by Thanissaro Bhikkhu.

bodhisatta in Theravada means 'Buddha-To-Be' or 'being seeking/desiring enlightenement'

in Theravada, a bodhisatta is not yet enlightened
