Theravadin Bodhisattvas?

I understand that the bodhisattva, or rather bodhisatta, vow is a rarely taken but perfectly acceptable Theravadin ideal. I was wondering if anyone could help give me the full scope of this and especially any suttas that have apparently inspired this ideal.

Thanks;

PS. I wouldn't be altogether surprised if Thanissaro or some like bhikkhu has written on the subject, if this is the case I apologize for my laziness. Please link me though! ;)
