  • Bill, do Americans believe in supernatural powers? Which states don't believe in levitation?

That's the sort of question that you're asking, that's why there's no straight forward answer.

I don't believe in supernatural powers, but I can only speak for myself.

If you want to learn about Buddhism then learn about the eightfold path and the four noble truths.
  • And make sure Anicca, Dukkha and Anatta are part of all that. :)
  • so... fire meant energy.
No. They believed the flame always existed, but the presence of fuel enabled it to become visible. Whereas we know now that the flame is caused by light emitted by excited electrons in the combustion process.

An analogy to their belief would be that a torch beam is always present, but invisible while the torch is off.

either way, does the belief in fire has consequences for the use of nirvāna as extinction/cessation (as in a fire)?

There are any stories of the masters attaining Great Siddhis powers, But they are but a by product of a focused mind. So it is better to be unconcerned with attaining them if one does happen to then great ore tools to use to benifit others SKILLFULLY. :)
