Meditation helps me sit still

edited February 2011 in Buddhism Basics
I'm a very fidgety person. Often feeling like I have to move my legs and toes in a rhythmic manner, almost like I'm drumming to a beat in my head. I've noticed that after 30 min. sessions of meditation I can just lay in my bed and feel completey comfortable with my legs still. How is it that meditation does this?

  • cause youre relaxed.
  • The important thing is that you noticed a causal link between meditation and a lack of restlessness. The details of how this process happens are not as important.

But there has been some research (which is still in its early days) into the effects of meditation on the brain and one of the findings seems to be that meditators are less likely to have unnecessary brain activity.

What this means is that when there is something to do or think about then neural activity is detectable, but when there's nothing to do the mind simply rests. Meditation makes your mind use its energy more efficiently.
