Tour companies with a Buddhist interest

edited February 2011 in General Banter
I have traveled on many Intrepid and GAP Adventures trips, mostly in Asia. I love the bare bones, just a notch above backpacking style they offer where you need not be concerned with booking transport or accommodations.

In Asia, there is a lot of time visiting temples, monasteries, etc., but it is all as a tourist.

I would like to find a tour company like these where there is time and intention for spending more spiritual time, time for joining the monks for chanting & meditation, overnight stays at retreat centers, yoga, etc. For one example, we spent about 4 hours in Auroville, India. I would have liked to have spent a couple days there, if that was possible. It looked, with a short look, like a wonderful place.

(Of course, having traveled such distances from the US, I would not want to abandon all tourism! There is still nothing like cruising Asian night markets, and ice cold Chang beer at a Bangkok sidewalk cafe. ;-)

I am almost comfortable enough with SE Asia to travel on my own, but know from experience that a good tour company with a good guide can assist you immeasurably with keeping down costs and aggravations, as well as provide sometimes essential translation help and the finding of local treasures that few casual travelers would stumble on themselves.
