how to look at anger/anxiety in meditation

edited March 2011 in Buddhism Basics
Hey everyone hoping someone can give me advice for this.

I understand when feelings or emotions come up in meditation that you are supposed to let them be in your mindfulness and one side effect of this can be that they sort of dissolve.

For me at the moment it seems when I turn my attention to anger or anxiety they just get worse. Recently I've mainly been getting off the cushion more angry or anxious than when I sat down. I'm deliberately not engaging with the "stories" and managing often to leave these be, the feelings/emotion just seem to magnify though.

I've been meditating about 2 years.now, its only in the past few months its been like this.

A breakthrough on the way or could I improve this bit of my practice?

  • The trick for me has been cultivation of metta for the sensations which make up the anger.

Sounds like you are making good progress. You would almost certainly benefit from talking to a teacher, if you get the opportunity.
