finding a teacher

edited March 2011 in Buddhism Basics
how exactly do you go about this? I've been to a couple of buddhist groups but they only seem to do a kind of group teaching thing. Like reading a couple of lessons from the sutras, then group meditation. I do value that of course but since I've been kind of self-educating myself for 2 years now I feel I'm at a point where I really need some one on one help... where would I go for that? Do you just meet people through the groups? I'm not saying I know it all (at all!) but I really need someone to guide me with my practice and help me understand the things I am currently finding challenging rather than looking at general principles. Do you have to be a monk to have this kind of relationship with a teacher? I understand such teachers must be quite in demand so maybe you have to prove yourself with a certain amount of dedication to the group first?

  • Have you tried talking to the leaders of these groups about what you're looking for? You will probably find them quite approachable if you do.
