egotistick or not?

edited March 2011 in Buddhism Basics
today a friend of mine was realy sad and had the feeling that no one liked her.
i helped her out and made her realise that touse feelings have nothing to do with teh truth
an that made her feel alot beter.
and being able to help her made me realy happy but now i'm wandering if the happy feeling i get out of helping my friends can be considered egotistical. when a friends sadnes makes me sad and i try to help that person am i than helping her for her sake or my own ?..

  • No, it's just empathy. If you can make someone feel better, you'll feel better too. It's not a matter of whether you're helping her for her sake or your own, 'cause they are not mutually exclusive.

Think of it this way. If your friend is sad, would you feel better, if he/she found an answer without any of your help, which would help him/her relieve the sadness or make him/her happier?
  • thanks :) that helped :)
