Meditation posture

edited March 2011 in Buddhism Basics
Is a necessary to be sitting up to properly meditate? I have messed up back and the pain is excruciating to sit up for extended times. I'll do it if I have to ;) . Just wondering

Any posture that is comfortable and doesn't restrict the airway should be okay.
  • I think a posture that you feel open and good.
  • There are certain ways to balance which might reduce the stress on your back. How bent are your knees? Elevating the body will reduce the pressure on the lower back, knees, ankles and hips.

You can use a chair as well. As long as the posture is 'alert' (doesn't make you doze off), then you're fine.
  • I try to sit as straight as possiable, but that gets uncomfortable for long periods of time so sometimes I slouch a little. But any posture is fine as long as you are comfortable.
