Vivid visions

edited March 2011 in Meditation
Namaste, beautiful people.

I have been meditating on and off for about 15 years. Sometimes when it is difficult I abandon it or forget about it but when I keep up my practice, I try to do a sitting meditation for about 30 minutes a day.

I'm a painter and so you can imagine that my mind naturally visualizes and daydreams very often throughout the day but in the past year something new has started to happen every once in a while during meditation. I focus on my breath until my mind quiets down and I am used to the odd thought or vision popping up and softly pulling my mind back to my breath or whatever the focus is, but what is new now is the surprising intensity, content and meaning of the visions that come over me and how they make me feel.

The first really strikingly intense vision I had involved not just imagery but sensations of motion without moving and sounds that I could hear clearly in my mind though I knew I was not actually hearing them. It was more than an image manipulated in my mind as if separate from me somehow, the moment was extremely clear and the experience was felt throughout my entire body. My mind began empty and then I saw myself take the shape of an empty wooden boat moving slowly and constantly forward resembling the constant flux of the moment and time. It felt that my skin was the shell of the boat and my consciousness existed quietly observing from the empty space inside. The sounds I heard in my mind were that of the wood of the boat creaking and the water lapping at the sides. I felt a tiny bit dizzy as if I were moving though I knew I wasn't. It felt like a very gentle roller coaster when you "lose your stomach". I started smiling! Then this disappeared and I saw that I was an orange fruit. I fell into a pile of oranges and could hear the waxy slap between them as it might sound from inside the orange where, again, I felt my consciousness was. I felt that my skin was the waxy thick skin of the orange. My spatial reasoning felt very active throughout all of this. The vision was all encompassing enough that I could easily see and understand the relative distance between all objects and materials as if from both the inside and outside at once. I finally opened my eyes with an intense joy that is rare for me. I felt so happy that I felt a tickle inside my stomach!

I'm curious if anyone has had any similar experiences in which they personified inanimate objects like this in a vision and what they felt about it?
