The grass is always greener

I would just like to share something with you all that illustrates something about the conditioned, ignorant human being.
For the majority of people in the UK, EU, USA, they all want to be tanned and you see tanning salons, sunbeds and a variety of creams or fake tan products.

Come to thailand and you see whitening creams, soap that has whitening properties, TV adverts that portray that being paler is the best way to look. Thai people use umbrellas when it is sunny or if they have to say cross the road and are in the sun for a mere 5 seconds, they may cover their face with a book.

Like I said, this goes for the vast majority and doesn't apply to everyone, but it is interesting I think to see how brainwashed people really are

  • Maybe that will make us all meet in the middle (the darker getting paler and the paler getting darker) and it will stop racism in the world!

    Just kidding of course :P
  • I just find it interesting how capitalism has brainwashed so many people, conditioned them so they think they need their skin to be a certain shade of colour, so they fork out money on these expensive creams or lay under the suns harmful rays.

In thailand, I think that if you are pale you are suspected to have a job that is inside and not working outside in the sun doing manual labor. You often see the manual labor guys with balaclarvas on in 30 degrees C heats, working.
Also the influx of westerners over the past 50 years has changed this part of asia a lot. They are now obsessed with 'the shiny things' and chasing the money.
  • It is sad to think of the number of people who look in the mirror and see so many things they want to change...
  • "In the desert look for water
On the ocean look for land"

    from a Savatage song
  • who or what is savatage?
  • a good rock band, the song is from "The Wake Of Magellan"

Too bad White America brutalized its naturally brown people, only to invent tanning beds and lotion to turn themselves as brown as possible. Life's little ironies... :p

I'd be considered a sexy beast in Thailand then.
  • Yeah I would love to have a big edward scissorhands long beard, but unfortunately the socially acceptable material is limited.
  • I'm sure they have a lower incidence of skin cancer than we do in the "tanned and toned" west...
  • Yea, they see the sun as a bad thing, even when they go swimming in the sea, (which is a rare occasion) they are fully clothed 99% of the time, often with hats on. It isn't exactly wrong or right, just different :p Skin cancer is the best cancer to get anyway if you have to choose, it has the highest survival rate up in the 90's if I am not wrong.

Go for the beard jeff.. whats holding you back, a career, boss, partner or society in general?
  • There are lots of different kinds of skin cancers Tom. Some of them have very low survival rates, especially if not caught very early. I know you're young, but don't ever be complacent about any kind of cancer. I was young and invincible once too - then I was diagnosed with a very rare kind of cancer when I was 31 (which undoubtedly seems ancient to you, but it's very young)...

    Life is short.
  • Everything I've heard is that melanoma can and does kill. I wouldn't recommend being cavalier about skin cancer.
  • Sorry if I struck some raw nerves there, I just read somewhere that skin cancer had like a 97% survival rate or something.. Glad you got over it though mountains, great to hear :)

Life is short, it's good to think that we have many of them to have the chance of being liberated though, for me, I think better luck next time
