Is this common in Tibetan Buddhism?

Hello all,

Is this common in Tibetan Buddhism? What do you think about demonstrations like this?

  • Hmm, I have to be honest. It looks all rather silly. Put an MMA fighter and lets see him use his magical powers...

  • Be like water.

  • It looks Chinese, and it's obviously staged. It looks like they used hired stuntmen or gymnasts to do some of the backwards rolls. Tibetan medicine has its own form of yoga, not Chi Gong.

Ric, I thought it was a little silly too, but I really didn't want to offend anyone. I have experience in the martial arts world, and most of the people who perform this kind of thing are... sketchy. I wasn't sure if this was just a martial arts thing or a tibetan buddhism thing.

Haha I love that as an MMA fighter myself. I have always WANTED to have the opportunity to be blasted with a kamehameha/energy blast like on that video. But usually all no nonsense martial artists know its BS and that no fighter can actually blast people with chi. We WANT to believe it, but it just doesn't work that way. If I could be blasted away with chi what a glorious blast that would be. Because I definitely wouldn't go down to the power of suggestion.

That's why most of these guys being affected by the chi blasts are loyal, gullible students. It won't work on any serious MMA fighter. I know of "internal martial arts masters" that charge $400+ for a few hours to learn their secrets of how to fly and shoot electricity. But as damn cool as it sounds, I guarantee they would lose to any Muay Thai boxer that takes their art seriously.

DAMN! that is a great video. What the hell is the magic guy doing....he was just standing there like something magical was gonna happen and he got his ass handed to him.
  • Wow, these guys exaggerate more than Benny Hinn's schills. Though it's been a few years since I saw the Benny Hinn comedy hour, so his stage shows might be even more ridiculous now.
  • In a word : no

The 1st video doesn't make any claims that it is real attacks. It might be a dance? My kung fu school taught tai chi. Watch the last 1 minute its clear this is a dance or acted.
  • This isn't part of the Tibetan tradition, AFAIK. It looks like something imposed by the Chinese.

Actually, if you watch the rest of the videos on the youtube channel, this guy actually says this stuff is real. He has a commentary on the heart sutra that is quite interesting until he starts throwing chi blasts.

Thank you. You see, I really wasn't sure if this was something common in Tibetan Buddhism. I know that many consider it to be more "mystical" than other schools, but this seemed to be rather too out there.

  • Well what lineage of Tibetan buddhism is he from?
