For beginners who have genuine questions, its not a problem.
Answering those questions are fine too.
But what about the rest of us, the rest of the time?

  • I'm practicing Zen. For me it's interesting to see what poeple from other traditions think and say or post links to the Buddhist resources I don't know about.

I keep it up while I'm at my desk at work.
  • I did get a lot of useful links.

You live and learn. Even something you thought you had pretty much figured out can be presented in new and interesting ways.....
    And we're a community.
Just as classes meet, and colleagues gather to work together, so we have a place to come in on, and interact, share, participate and contribute.

When I was living in Thailand I felt connected to Buddhism on a daily basis. After moving back to the States (Colorado) I felt very isolated from Buddhism. So this is the best connection I have found.

When you do things mindfully, most activities are nourishing.
  • I've learned a lot from the sutric passages and links, and the debates. And I've been able to help the occasional member in distress. I think participation here is like anything; if you're mindful, you can get a lot out of it and make a positive contribution as well. But if it becomes something to simply pass the time with, or entertainment, then one's time might be more productively spent elsewhere. I've struggled to find a balance, a middle way here. It's like watching TV: you can select a show because of its educational aspect. But what do you do when the show is over? Do you continue to sit and stare at the screen, even though you're not particularly interested in the next show (and the next, and the next...)? Or do you mindfully get up after you've seen your one show, and turn your attention to something more constructive? I try to be mindful of how I spend my time, but it takes a modicum of discipline.

As a moderator, it's a skillful use of my time to help keep the place clean and friendly for discussions related to Buddhist teachings that can help people.

As a member, I've been helped a lot by the discussions and hope to have helped (and continue to help) others as well. So that's a "yes" on both counts.
