I tried internet searching this topic, hoping for something along the lines of "mindful stick shifting."

I am unsure what you mean by "manual transmissions". It brings to mind secret handshakes in Freemasonry !

If you can tell me what this has to do with Modern Buddhism, I'll move it back to there from General Banter.....

    many thanks! :)
  • At the risk of being comical and sarcastic, I would think the buddha would say something like this:

It's hard to be mindful of the scenery outside when you're in fifth gear and your accelerator is pushed to the floor.

    and,

Everything is impermanent, even your transmission gear.
  • Manual transmissions happen all the time in Zen when the monk slaps the student.

And furthermore, "What is the sound of one hand clapping?"

Automatic transmissions would make Buddhism too easy.

Beaten by a stick or smacked or telling him to shut up and continue sitting would be the sound of manual transmission!

Maybe. It depends on the insight of the student.
