We can fix the broken mind because we know what a more perfect mind looks like thanks to the Buddha.
  • That's the key. Having a mind afflicted by ignorance just proliferated more ignorance and causes suffering. If we can let go of this tension and thinking a little bit at a time then gradually our minds will see more clearly. When your mind becomes more sharp like this then you become even more effective at fixing the "broken mind."
  • A MIND ISNT BROKEN IF THAT MIND IS ASKING THIS QUESTION.
  • AND LEON IS RIGHT..SIT, BE STILL, BE SILENT, AND LISTEN TO YOUR MIND. DONT DWELL JUST LISTEN. ''EVERYTHING WILL BE OK IN THE END..AND IF ITS NOT OK THEN ITS NOT THE END''

To what degree is each mind broken? If the mind doing the attempted "fixing" is too far gone, then it's impossible. If the mind to be fixed is too far gone, then it's impossible too. It's relative.

The OP question as posed appears to be fundamentally fallacious. Obviously a mind that is able to follow some kind of Dharmic path is not completely broken. The responses so far show that there is a "non-broken part" of the mind that can fix the "broken part".

IMO the question as stated is just a non-starter.

Most minds aren't broken. Buddhist practice evolves and teaches, rather than "fixes". I think your question implies "broken" as having some permanance, which is inaccurate.

there is no such thing is broken. only the mind labels and projects interpretations.
but i am going to assume you know a little something about zen and thus is a koan you're asserting.

your original nature is clear and completely unstained. people look at the reflection but never at what is looking.

How do you get a healthy body with a sick body? With nutrition & exercise?
Acknowledging that you have a broken mind is the 1st step. For the next 11 steps, you have to join AA. Just kidding.

Mind is just mind. Perceiving mind as "broken" is a mental formation. Believing the mind is "broken" is a testament to the power of mind to "create" personal truth - which can seem very valid to the individual - but it is false - or rather, impermanent.
