I don't think he would mind if someone took him to a show, but I also don't think he would seek out a comedy club for fun.

Based on the current video on cnn.com...where an Australian newsman interviewing him tried to tell him a joke about himself...no. Due to the language barrier, the DL didn't get the joke at all.

The joke was, "The Dalai Lama walks into a pizza parlor and asks the man at the counter, 'Can you make me one with everything?'"

It is kind of a cute joke. But the language barrier made it go right over his head.
  • Surely someone has one of those lists of types of entertainment forbidden to bhikkhus, like "grotesque mime" and so forth. I think those would be out.

Which is not to say that HHDL is not a funny guy who likes a good laugh. I have read that he describes himself as a "professional laugher". He would just have to be circumspect. He mugged for the cameras when being treated for nasal allergies:

  • HHDL often doesn't understand the jokes, because he doesn't have enough of a background in the details of Western culture to "get it". I saw a video where someone told him a joke (on TV) about ordering Pizza (he knew what a Pizza Shop was after his interpreter explained): "A monk walked into a pizza shop and asked if he could get "one with everything _/\_" . HHDL waited patiently, as if the punch line hadn't come yet. The narrator repeated the line "One with everything" with praying hands. No reaction from HHDL. Then someone commented that he didn't understand, because he'd never ordered pizza, it's a common experience in the West, and HHDL laughed, not at the joke (still clueless), but at the fact that he was so out of the loop. He's a good sport.

Anyway, I think comedy clubs would be over his head.
