Finding a Teacher

edited June 2011 in Buddhism Basics
Hi everyone,
I'm a "newbie" and I wondered if anyone has advice for finding a Buddhist teacher. I live just outside of the Toronto (Canada) area so I would have to go into the city as there isn't any kind of Buddhist community in the rural area I live in. The distance factor is a challenge, however, I don't want to be discouraged from delving deeper into what I feel is my spiritual path.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Do you know what tradition you're interested in (Zen, Ch'an, Theravada, Tibetan)? Does it matter? For a beginner, it probably doesn't. Have you Googled "Toronto Buddhist centers"? I did. There are several Tibetan centers, a Zen center, and an International meditation hall. Take a look at

  • There are so many traditions, but I feel drawn to Tibetan and Mahayana. I'll check out the website you've suggested. I think I have Googled Buddhist Centres in the past but came up with so many that I didn't know where to start!
I am a bit familiar with the Shambhala centre in downtown Toronto. I took a meditation course out here where I live and that's what got me interested. I've read up on Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche (an interesting man!, the meditation I learned was taught by a meditation teacher who was a student of Trungpa and, it was based around Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche's book "Ruling Your World".

I have to admit, it was advanced for me but it did pique my interest. I'm a big fan of Pema Chodron after watching some of her YouTube videos and reading her articles. She has a way of explaining the teachings so that everyone can understand (and she uses humour as well!).

@Lotusflower The Shambala centre??! where Pema Chodron is? wow your so lucky. I would only dream to go somewhere like that :)
  • Actually, Pema Chodron is the resident teacher at Gampo Abbey in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. A long way from here in Ontario! But, yes, I am lucky that I'm near a Shambhala Centre, for sure :)
