the prior decade included a lot of personal suffering and alienation of most but the closest friends. I don't trust my family because of my experience.
meditation make me much happier... but the trust of most I know was gone.
do you think I want to talk about it with a bunch of barely respectful (in this thread) strangers?
the question was rethorical, do you think that psychiatry is harmful?
You are here every day. Do these strangers mean so little to you? Why would you try to get a rise out of them then?
I know that if it wasn't for psychiatry I'd be dead. That's enough for me.
Yes, I agree that it is a field that needs careful consideration, however my family would be a wreck without proper diagnoses and treatment. we are still refining the diagnoses in fact but most every thing done so far has made us waaay more functional. There are also family members who refuse treatment and that is very hard. the illnesses that psychiatrists treat are life threatening. My brother in law lost his brother to suicide many years ago so we do know.
All I can say is what I say for why I am buddhist, it is based on my experience. You may have a different experience so I do not expect understanding. However it does frustrate and sadden me that no other set of illnesses is questioned this way therefore I am not able to share very much. No one accuses a diabetic of accepting poison, but if your imbalance in brain based then there can be a lot of judgment and stigma to deal with.
Howeve please tread carefully, there are many people here and everywhere who struggle with these illnesses daily. You would never know who they are, you have no idea what they are dealing with daily, and our compassion should extend to having an open mind about anothers experience, just as my compassion can extend to you who has not suffered any of these illnesses while you make these comments.
I don't know what "get a rise" means in this context.
strangers as in people I have never met...
What I meant was that you are intentionally provoking people. You had a lengthy debate about this before so you know what to expect. I have described my family's and my own experiences with psychiatry and medication in several threads. So I am not commenting about this without a personal interest in it.

federicaSeeker of the clear blue sky...Its better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak out and remove all doubtModerator
Vincenzi, what you state is personal opinion, with little factual foundation or corroborated evidence. you are provocative and argumentative, with little or no authoritative information to uphold your arguments. Your words are contradicted by many, and frankly, your comments are far more disrespectful than the substantiated statements of others.
If I were you, I would steer clear of all and any discussion relating to mental health.
