closing the border

Received in email today, this video of a ceremony along the Indian-Pakistani border. Aside from the knee-jerk snickers it invites, I found it pretty instructive of the human heart and mind. But that's just me.

Hmmmm...I don't find it any more deserving of snickering than traditions that are a thousand years old or more -- like mandatory shaving of heads, wearing a robe that hasn't changed much and isn't particularly practical, or not fulfilling basic bodily needs like eating after noon.

There are a lot of rituals for closing the borders. Not all of them are quite so ornate, but some are dressed up in more subtle trappings.
