How many posts here do you think are fakes?

I ask because one thing that happens sometimes on the internet is that people post with ulterior motives.

For example, you might have a man, or even group of men, post as a woman. And then claim they're pregnant or something.

Or they'll try to pretend they're into the same kind of thing you are, for whatever reason.

Do you think it could happen here?

Just curious.

Buddha bless,

Conrad.

Around here, the only phony I know is me.
  • Something like this came up months ago, and the mods and admin said they have enough experience on forums that they can usually tell when someone is faking something. I don't think we have to worry about it; we can trust our staff to do their job. On the rare occasion they miss something, a member will usually tip them off.
  • Oh, I'm not worried. It's only a little trickery, aimed at deceiving people in small ways.

It's not a great evil, like, (say) murdering someone for money, or providing paid killers with what they need to make a job go through.

    Buddha bless,

    Conrad.

There are many interesting and worthwhile members whom I think really want to help people.

Then there are the few that ask questions or start ridiculous threads just to see if they can get a response (often easy to spot). Usually it's the same people over and over. I keep hoping the Mods will get together, make a list and do something about cleaning this site up.

it's important to be able to discern between what is useful to yourself and not useful to yourself.

also it is important to recognize that the world doesn't revolve around you, thus some may benefit from different perspectives,
while you may not see value in it.

even if it is a troll, then it is a lesson in patience.
either way drink your tea and have a good day!

This is mostly not a problem concerning the forum, though there are people who would lead you to believe (or state clearly) things that are not true of themselves. Where this becomes a problem is when strangers who post on a forum to deceive others begin or try to form intimate (if "internet") relationships with you, perhaps for purposes that only they can know. Safeguard your privacy and be wary, not being too personal with anyone you don't know well enough. Do not take for granted that someone is a "Buddhist" and will not try and con/scam you or worse.

@Cloud Really?? You've seen scammers on this forum, or elsewhere? Thanks for the warning. Such a samsaric world...

I've been a member of a couple different forums and I've seen this type of behavior. It depends on the forum. On specific topics like cooking, baking, decorating, electronics- you rarely run into this problem. On sites for spirituality, religions, atheism, or other philosophical material, this seems to be common. I stay away from certain topics and posters because they fit the troll/player style. I was not totally surprised to see this here.

Not to sound like I'm lecturing anyone, but when I join a forum, I consider myself a guest in the host's home. I try to keep my posts relevant to the type of forum I've joined. I try to be polite and helpful when I can. I don't try to hijack a site to suit my own interests or to play the other members- that's just rude and uncalled for.
