I know everyone will have his or her opinions on this but is there a Buddhism that follows the real teachings of the Buddha more then others or does it matter.

  • The Four Noble Truths and the Noble Eightfold Path are, as far as I'm concerned, pretty much what you need. The rest of the stuff is extra.

@jupitermadcat -- There are those who claim to be guided by "real" and "authentic" Buddhist teachings. Whether you credit such things or not, still you have to find out for yourself.

I think you'll find the same kind of diversity (roughly) as you find in Christianity. There will be those who say "My way is the only way", and there will be those who say "Different strokes for different folks". I think Mountains is right in saying that as long as it follows the 4NT and the 8FP, then it's Buddhism.

If the question is what form of Buddhism seems closest to what was practiced during the Buddha's time, at least as it is documented in the Pali Canon, I would say "Thai Forest Tradition" (a form of Theravada, though I don't think that matters).
