Different "types" of buddhism

edited August 2011 in General Banter
Hi all. I'm new here. I'm wondering about the different types of Buddhism I'm seeing. Is it a chronology? Location?
Can anyone explain?

All schools of Buddhism agree on The Four Noble Truths (observations about this life) and The Eightfold Path (suggestions about what to do in the face of those observations).

After that, emphases and applications vary according to time, place, culture, belief, hope, comfort, wealth, health and whatever all else.

I think, if you haven't already done so, you might read a broad summary, such as the one you can find on Wikipedia, then branch out from there.
  • Here s a nice summary of the different schools of Buddhism

One great site I always recommend for studying up on Buddhism, of all traditions, is at http://www.buddhanet.net.

Generally there's Theravada (School/Discipline of the Elders), Mahayana (the Greater Vehicle) and Vajrayana/Tibetan Buddhism. Each recognizes the others but believes itself to be the best. Some forms of Buddhism are barely recognizable for what they are, such as Zen which is a form of Mahayana but is much less complicated.
  • Wow! Thanks Cloud. What a great site. I can't wait to get to learn!!!
