The practice of Buddhism is largely a practice of attention ... attention to mistakes, for example, and responsibility in correcting those mistakes as best possible.

Little and large ... attention. Attention to attachments, for example ... and also 'atachments.'
Attention to Buddha and to 'Budda.'

Attention is pretty much what you were told in the third grade: If you can't get the little stuff right, you can forget about nailing down the big stuff. :)

  • Is this apropos of anything in particular, genkaku? Look, I'm a stickler for spelling and grammar myself, but I hold my tongue on this forum in the interests of fostering a free exchange of ideas. I make an effort to loosen up and not cling to perfectionism so as not to antagonize people. Besides, sometimes I don't have time to review my posts, sometimes I have limited computer time, so I've been known to have errors in my posts, just like everyone else. So due to all the above reasons, I've let go of the issue. Nitpicking doesn't make for good friendships, and doesn't encourage dialogue. :-/ meh...
  • Lots of people here aren't native English speakers. Cut them some slack..

OK ... misspell to your heart's content.
  • Okay, I shall endeavor to do so at every opportuntiy.

  • Forget English, have you seen people's Sanskrit ? My goodness people do not know their 'a' from their 'ā'

  • Shameful.
  • Stop showing off, zid. (Actually, I'm impressed: aren't computers cool? You can access fonts for any language! Even Chinese, which doesn't have an alphabet, just an infinite number of character combinations, so I don't know how they ever developed a font, not to mention typewriters...!)
  • Chinese typewriters are really HUGE... :)

I'm terrible with my grammar, but I'm a perfectionist with my spelling!:) LOL! But great points! Very great points!
    Thanks for the reminder!
  • I am a proofreader and copy-editor by profession, so for a small consideration I will happily iron out anybody's spelling and grammar lapses prior to posting.

    :D :hiding:
  • Now Vix... their is no knead for that. We all now that speeling and gramar isn't problem's for most people :)

I do the best I can using Google-translate and Windows spell check. Google translate says it is called a spell check. But is a spell not some kind of magic? A kind of magic or a kind off magic? Both are correct says the spell check. When both are correct than what should I do? Than or then?

That’s the kind of struggle we go through.
Pleas (?) point out my mistakes in a PM.
  • This reminds me of the German EU joke ...

The European Commission has just announced an agreement whereby English will be the official language of the European Union rather than German, which was the other possibility.

As part of the negotiations, the British Government conceded that English spelling had some room for improvement and has accepted a 5- year phase-in plan that would become known as “Euro-English”.

In the first year, “s” will replace the soft “c”. Sertainly, this will make the sivil servants jump with joy.

The hard “c” will be dropped in favour of “k”. This should klear up konfusion, and keyboards kan have one less letter.

There will be growing publik enthusiasm in the sekond year when the troublesome “ph” will be replaced with “f”. This will make words like fotograf 20% shorter.

In the 3rd year, publik akseptanse of the new spelling kan be expekted to reach the stage where more komplikated changes are possible.

Governments will enkourage the removal of double letters which have always ben a deterent to akurate speling.

Also, al wil agre that the horibl mes of the silent “e” in the languag is disgrasful and it should go away.

By the 4th yer people wil be reseptiv to steps such as replasing “th” with “z” and “w” with “v”.

During ze fifz yer, ze unesesary “o” kan be dropd from vords kontaining “ou” and after ziz fifz yer, ve vil hav a reil sensi bl riten styl.

Zer vil be no mor trubl or difikultis and evrivun vil find it ezi tu understand ech oza. Ze drem of a united urop vil finali kum tru.

Und efter ze fifz yer, ve vil al be speking German like zey vunted in ze forst plas.

Sea? Awl you knead is spell-check! Problem salved!
  • @Mountains and @Dakini...

    ...definitely not thinking un-Buddhist thoughts...

    ...honest...

...and DEFINITELY haven't broken the 4th precept in writing this post.

    :D
  • Definately :)
  • The 4th precept? Is that the "Thou Shalt Not Misspell" one?
  • edited August 2011
Yep. It's the one that comes right after Thou Shalt Not Use Apostrophes When Pluralising Nouns, Thou Shalt Not Say 'Yourself' When Thou Dost Mean 'You', and Thou Shalt Use Either A Colon Or A Dash, But Not Both Together.

    :nyah:
  • Useing to many apostrophe's isn't to big of a problem for me myself. It definately is for some other's though!

Don't forget; thou shalt not use objective pronouns as the subject of a sentence. ;)

Except when thou dost use the passive form of the verb, of course.

  • Obviously. :)

  • The one time I made a comment about a member's spelling, a mod let me know that this type of comment isn't appropriate. Gripe about spelling at your own risk.
  • Trying to keep it light hearted, we have to understand that not everyone here speaks English as their native tongue. And even those of us who do often have trouble. English isn't the easiest of languages in which to master spelling and grammar. Rules? We don't need no stinking rules!
  • Plus, some people post from phones and other hand-held devices, so it can be difficult to proofread their posts. I think we can all loosen up and be understanding of the variety of challenges members face, having a non-native knowledge of English being just one among several.

You were reading my mind, Mts. i was going to post about Esperanto, but I restrained myself. Speaking of international languages, and all...
But the reality is that for now, English is the international language, for better or for worse.
  • I refuse to spell correctly. I am stubborn like that. Seriously I don't know if its being away from school....buuuut since I have been on antipsychotic and mood stabilizer medicines I have been misspelling sound alike words quite a bit.. And then there are those words that I cannot break my habit and cannot be bothered to use a dictionary or any software, haha. I did learn how to spell sEpArAtE however. (not seperate)
