Incense and Cones

edited August 2011 in Buddhism Basics
I love incense sticks and cones and burn them frequently, so much so that after a zumba class recently my sweaty hair smelled of incense. I have favourite smells and scents and believe they are meant for different occasions and circumstances.
anyone any advice on what to use when? and others favorite smells?

Anything can be used for any purpose and incense is no different. In meditation halls, incense has an array of uses, but the most frequent is (as with all the other meditation hall paraphernalia) to get your attention.

The question each person needs to answer for her- or himself is: Attention to what?
  • I can only use certain ones, as others cause a *violent* allergic sneezing fit if I so much as take sniff of them. If I actually burn them in my house, my eyes swell up, etc.
  • Oh no l would be gutted, l love Sandalwood cones they just smell loverly and whenever anyone comes to my house they always comment about how loverly it smells.

a quick digress....i have been reading about alters! with a buddha and a candle and incense, is it common to have an alter i do like the idea.
  • @kayward2011 - I like the idea too! I'm forming the idea of what form my altar will take, when I eventually make one.

I love rose-scented incense. I also have jasmine and sandalwood. Recently though, I burned incense in my bedroom so frequently that one day I walked in and it smelt literally of smoke. Not of rose incense, just smoke - like I'd been having cigarettes in there!

(What was that about the Middle Way again? :D )

Also very dangerous to some pets...deadly for parrots.

  • Actually for almost any bird. Birds don't do well with smoke or fumes.
  • Vix - I was shopping at Target one day. I happened to lay my eye on this little side/accent table that I otherwise wouldn't have given a notice to. The first thought that went through my head was "there's my altar!". The table was on sale, so that sealed it :) You'll know it when you see it...
