uncleaniness meditation

edited September 2011 in Meditation
Anyone tried this meditation? Did it decrease sexual desires over time? I've only just started doing it cause my horndog levels have recently increase... :/:/:/ Although I've read that Metta meditation could actually increase desires, and I have infact been doing alot of that previously.

Trying to shut down or eradicate aspects of the so-called self is a fool's errand. Better is just to observe and take responsibility.

You mean blood, bones, bile, pus, piss and shit meditation? :) Yes, it works very well. So much so that when you see a blond barbie bimbo at the mall, with her boobs and butt totally hanging out, what you actually see is a 90 yr old grandma who is about to kiel over dead. :p

I don't get why people are taught that sexual desires are unclean.

Tar sand oil production = unclean
    Burning coal = unclean
    littering = unclean
    hurting people = unclean
shitting on the walls = unclean

    etc.

It's an attempt to combat attachment. If the object of sexual desire is imagined as a sickening bag of filth, it becomes less appealing.

@ Ch'an_noob: If this actually really works for you, well, cool. I suspect at some point you're going to require something a little more sophisticated, though. I mean, the whole problem with "re-visualizing" something as a gross mess is that the idea of its grossness is just as conditioned and illusory as its attractiveness.

In Hindu, there was always a fundamental disagreement between the oldschool ascetics and the newer Tantrikas. The ascetics used this "uncleanliness" meditation technique. The Tantrikas insisted that these techniques only served to "delay the inevitable", and didn't serve to equip the seeker of liberation with a real understanding of problem.

Anyway, good luck. I really admire celibacy (I'm assuming you're celibate). Hope it works out.
  • No celibacy here. It doesn't help my meditative concentration to be distracted by hotties all over the place.

I agree completely with this. I think using the word unclean with sexual desires, is not a healthy practice. We're naturally attracted to stuff for a reason. We should listen to ourselves of why we're attracted. To rid ourselves of that attachment just doesn't seem practical. For guys we get horny a lot, it's called testosterone, it happens. Go rub one off, or lift weights. Usually that can burn a bit of it off. To me that is more healthy than trying to brain wash the mind that it is unclean desires.

  • I think it comes down to simply seeing the whole truth. Recently my brother had to have a colostomy for several months. When seeing that bag of feces I could not help but be reminded that I was carrying mine around inside.

  • Am I attracted to their nose, eyes, mouth, hair, and body?

Or am I attracted to the mucus within the nose, saliva within the mouth, peeling skin within the hair and sweat coming out the pores?

I think this meditation is not intended to make you obsess over impurity or view body as filthy or suppress sexual desires. It is merely intended to bring some balance and counteract excessive desire that may disturb you. The mind exaggerates the qualities we desire, so meditation on impurity aims to bring the balance.

Clear and precious explaination! I need to work on my communication skills!

It's not a healthy practice for some people but it is a healthy practice for others, especially for those who are monks and people with similar minds to a monk. The point is to reduce craving, for bodily forms, which in turn reduces suffering. It's not about "brainwashing", it's about reducing and eliminating one of the 3 poisons, namely greed. Some people simply don't want to be free of greed and that's fine, some people do. For those that do, it is a healthy practice. If it wasn't, The Buddha would not have recommended it to such people. Did he recommend it for all people? No. :)

    Masturbation?

It used to work well for me when I was a single teen.
  • Beauty is only skin deep. Get beneath the skin and the conventional view of beauty is gone. The true nature of the body becomes apparent.
