Medicine Buddha practice

edited September 2011 in Meditation
Hello everyone,
I don't know if anyone else does Medicine Buddha practice at all? I went to a Medicine Buddha retreat last year, at the Tibetan Kagyu centre near me and since then I've enjoyed chanting and Medicine Buddha visualisation (it's one of the Tibetan practices considered 'safe' for everyone, without empowerments or specialist instruction). The only downside is that after 108 recitations of the mantra, I tend to grow a little hoarse :(

I found a lovely, musical rendition of the Medicine Buddha mantra on YouTube, sang by Khenpo Pema Chopel Rinpoche:

Incidentally, I believe Khenpo Rinpoche has released an album. I cannot find any trace of it here in UK, but if anyone knows how I can get hold of it, do let me know. I'd particularly like this mantra.

  • I like the medicine Buddha mantra too. Do u chant the full or shortened version? How long does it take you? Do you do it every day. I'm just learning it. I've managed the short version :)
There are a few nice renditions online.

I'm especially drawn to Medicine Buddha. I work in the medical profession so feel like there is a connection :) and I love the blue. Very calming.

  • Hi B,
    The chant I use is:
TAYATHA OM BEKANDZE BEKANDZE MAHA BEKANDZE RANDZA SAMUGATE SOHA

I do have the entire puja but I'm not sufficiently good at Tibetan, even transliterated like this, to make anything other than a hash at it. I was taught that it is fine to take bits of the ritual and use them as I see fit, and as I can manage.

I have a picture of Medicine Buddha which I have in a small, gold frame and I like to hang my lapis lazuli necklace over it, but that's just me - I sort of make it up as I go along.
  • P.S. It takes about 20 minutes for 108 repetitions - I use mala beads to keep track.
  • That's handy to know. I often think about trying the full 108 so good to know I can give that a go now. Thx

If saying the mantra is tough on your throat its ok to say it silently in your head too.
  • :) I really like that video. I was just listening to this one:
