a friend of mine says im young??

edited October 2011 in Buddhism Basics
my friend says i am a young person, and says that this is either my first life on earth, because i am kind of strange, or i am young because in that i havent had many human lives. as i am very naive.
but the more i think of it, i am a much happier person than she is and with a far more positive out look, i think its more down to the fact that i am living a life as a not so intelligent person, so i have to struggle more in life, as i really have to try hard in exams (i am a uni student). is it in any texts about knowing how many human lives you have had or anything? maybe i am just taking it to heart a bit.

  • i am 12.. who is younger now?
  • I don't think it much matters, even if someone else "knew" these things (which they don't - it's just an opinion at best). Whether you're here for the first time or for the 12,275,933rd time, does it make any difference to this exact moment in this lifetime?

Such things can be fun to toy with as mental exercises, but they don't serve much purpose in our journey.
  • zuiverGEO, this doesn't sound like a very nice friend.

Studies have shown that people who have more average intelligence, but work hard, like you, often do better in life than highly intelligent people, who have it easier. Having to work hard to achieve what you want builds character, and helps set up diligent habits that will serve you well in life.

What looks like naivete to some can, in fact, be a sign of a high level of spiritual evolution. Anyway, it's not a contest. The important thing is to practice kindness, and to strive for insight via meditation and mindfulness. Anyone can do that. Look for friends who are kind, and who value who you are. :)

    zuiverGEO,

Its understandable why you might wrestle a little bit with your friend's words. Old soul vs new soul is a very new agey idea, and is often used to make people feel better about themselves... giving them a sense of happiness that they are somehow wise. In my opinion, just hug her and let it go.

As far as your intelligence is concerned, your difficulty with exams is only a small measure of your brain's power. Usually, people with weakness in one area have strengths in others. For instance, I can understand complex systems pretty eaisly, but I struggle like crazy when I try to play music... and I look more like a man having a seizure than someone trying to dance. If you really wish to consider your own intelligence, you have to include more than test taking. We have different types of intelligence, such as:

    Verbal intelligence: using words
Logical intelligence: math and logicial reasoning
Spatial intelligence: picturing things in our mind
    Body/movement intelligence: balance, coordination
    Musical intelligence: rhythm, recalling melodies
Interpersonal intelligence: communicating and connecting to others
Analytical intelligence: analyzing systems and events
Naturalist intelligence: understanding nature and the natural world

Schools focus a lot of attention on logical and analytical intelligence. This is only a tiny part of what makes your brain tick. I'd bet you have areas where you really accelerate!

    With warmth,

    Matt

    Interesting question.
Buddha said all of us have countless previous lives.
So, you just started you journey......
    Welcome to samsara.

  • i think i worded this badly, i was just wondering if there was a new/old soul theory or something, i dont care about it, neither does my friend.. we just like to compete.
but either saying i am older or younger is only self-assertion anyway.
    but yeah, great answers guys

Someone once told me I was an "old soul." As far as I can figure out, it never helped pay for the groceries.

If you're talking about Buddhism, there is no such thing as a "soul" because that implies that there is a self, which there isn't.

We've all been here countless times before ("here" does not mean planet earth, btw), but it's not "you" who was here. There is no "you" so it's neither young nor old.
  • i know of this, which is why i didnt say soul, because i dont beleive in a soul, i just used it later on, as everyone else was, and 'soul' is the best fit..

showing this to my friend we have now all decided that we had it wrong and then i am potentially the older as i dont worry and move on from a negative action, and that my friend is a medium aged soul and that our other friend is younger as he is constantly dwelling on ideas and making himself unhappy.

I still don't fully understand these kinds of statements... Do you (or anyone else) know if there is a book that clearly and concisely lays out Buddhist philosophy?
