when trying to lose weight i believe its better to eat long lasting fats then carbs because carb dont fill you up and dont last that long enegry wise plus they turn into fats anyway if youre not using them. what do you think?

  • I suppose a healthy balance between both is out of the question?
  • thats fine

  • Heres a good guy. He is a fruitarian and eats allegedly almost 90 bananas a day and is fit, man.

I think the best option to lose weight is to eat a high carb diet in fruit, with more energy and better quality of life with.
  • cabossimn, some guys lose weight effortlessly when they switch to a vegetarian diet.
However, many people, male and female, do best with a low-carb diet. Take a look at the book, "Protein Power", by a husband-wife MD team by the last name of Eades. It spells out all the details. This is not an extreme diet, like the Atkins Diet. However, in order to get maximum benefit from it, you need to go to the gym 3 x/wk. and workout with weights, or do the equivalent at home. And it has a guide for easing off the diet gradually when you're done, so you don't gain weight back.
  • If you eat no carbs you wont have any energy to go to the gym 3 x week

You don't "eat no carbs". (I said, above, that this isn't an extreme diet.) You eat small portions of carbs. Both men and women have got great results with that diet, including myself and friends.
  • man, I just say, eat lots of fruit, dosent make you fat. fat makes you fat. Work out, either run, bike, or gym which you prefer
  • Julia Childs said: eat diverse foods, don't eat seconds, and enjoy life! Thats my diet.
  • @Fenix if you ate 90 bananas a day you wouldn't be fat, you'd be dead. The potassium content of bananas is high - which isn't a problem if you eat a couple, but 90 would be a severe over-dose.

Too much potassium stops your heart.

    Don't believe everything you hear.
  • Buddhism, like life should be, is about the middle path. Not either extreme, but rather the moderate middle. 90 bananas a day is silly.

Hence why it's used in executions.

Just as an aside, 90 bananas a day (or probably even 900) wouldn't stop your heart. Your body is very good at getting rid of excess potassium and other electrolytes. The amount of K required to stop your heart is orders of magnitude more than what's found in any kind of food.

However, eating 90 bananas a day would probably give you such a belly ache and such horrible diarrhea you'd wish you were dead... And I'm not sure how you'd physically eat 90 bananas a day. Assuming you slept for 8 hours, that would mean you'd need to eat more than 5.6 bananas every waking hour. The thought of that makes me nauseated... :)
  • i meant bad carbs. like bread and not eatting much and not using it. ya know good ol american style haha.

I want to learn more about Raw Diet. Anyone on it, or have been on it? Or friends and family on it?
    Thanks,
    Leon
  • I might have got the technicalities wrong, but he runs a good website www.30bananasaday.com

    @LeonBasin

If you want to know more about the raw diet, you should watch that guys videos I posted earlier. He has been on a raw vegan diet for 10 years and is a top athlete.

I was just talking with my acupuncturist yesterday about this very thing. TCM (traditional Chinese medicine) would recommend highly against an all-raw diet. He said it would be very detrimental to the health, both physical and mental.

There are still somethings like apples and carrots that I don't really want cooked, but the TCM view makes a lot of sense to me.

I know that's not true because my aunt very foolishly went on a bananas only fad diet, and put herself in the hospital with potassium poisoning! Her heart was really struggling. We were just lucky the doctor had come across this before. Since that happened, we have discovered it is not as rare as you might imagine, especially among athletes and others who eat a lot of bananas and oranges.

Incidentally, it can also happen if you eat too much licorice.

Every human body is different - but in general, if you're otherwise healthy and have healthy kidneys, you're not going to OD on potassium. You can get elevated potassium (hyperkalemia, which is what your aunt had), but that's a *long* way from lethality. Trust me, I give the stuff to patients every day :)

Gee, I quite agree. 1 banana makes me constipated...90 would probably mean I would go to the bathroom for 3 months! Not good! :p
