In Order to Achieve Success in This World

edited October 2011 in General Banter
One must have the means and knowledge of what it is they wish to achieve, and they must have the impetus to achieve it no matter what any one else says or does.

Shunryu Suzuki Roshi once asked approximately, "Which would you rather have -- a million dollars or a good time while making it?"
  • Probably a good time while making it, because then you can look back and know that you had fun, and still have that million dollars in your hands.
  • to achieve success in this world is to be happy with this world
  • What do you mean when you say 'success'? For me, it's a successful day if my family and I are fed, clothed and still have a home at the end of it.

Maybe "success" generally means just one thing: Me.

I love it when this type of topic arises, 'success'. You ask my father success is money and being healthy, you ask my mother it would probably be the same but also that her two children are happy. I would say you are successful in life if you are TRUELY content with how it is.
  • Funny this should come up, I was listening to tapes today that someone suggested about success, i am pretty convinced that I have some internal block and just want to see if i can address that and earn a living wage. So there was a lot of good stuff about success, not just an aquire money message, and then by the end of the day I started to say "i am successful", right now, right here, without enough earnings, dealing with conflict, crying over lost love, yup. This is it.

    Just feeling it
  • Yep... you got it.

  • There is a program on UK TV which I love to watch called "The Secret Millionaire" (I believe the format has been transferred to USA, but they don't do it so well IMHO). Every week, you have some millionaire going to live, under cover, in a scumbag town, working with charities and good causes. At that end of it, they write cheques to their favourite causes and try to help the people.

It always amazes me how much these charities can do with what is a relatively small amount of money for the millionaire. But the thing that amazes me week after week is seeing how empty and lonely the lives of most of the millionaires are, before the program.

All of the millionaires say they benefit far more than the people they give money to - they find friends who don't just want them for their money, they learn about the joys of helping others and getting hands-on with their help. Invariably, it turns out they have some hidden hurt which has driven them to become millionaires, but which is ultimately far better helped by helping others.

It is a very uplifting program. The thing you come away from though is that even in the most horrible of places, real communities exist, good people live and people can be happy. The money helps, but not a lot of money. And also you learn that millionaires are often very unhappy people.

The only "success" I really wish for is that I might make the world a little better. I know that's romantic and idealistic, but I suspect it leads to a happier life than just wanting more *stuff*.
