What a relief! RE: Health Insurance

I just received tremendous news! For months I've been fretting over the fact that my health insurance was about to expire at the end of this year. I quit my corporate retail job about a year ago and under the COBRA extension, I was offered a year of health insurance at the same group rate I was already paying. I thought this was great and would buy me more time to look into private insurance (since I'm now self-employed)... However, over the past year I've only become more and more depressed about the situation and contemplating whether or not I can really afford it. Even the crappiest plans seem rather pricey...

But low and behold, I received a letter in the mail that under the Affordable Care Act, I have been 'grandfathered in' and am eligible for re-enrollment at almost the same rate(a negligible increase of only $5 more a month). Granted, the insurance itself is rather crappy BUT it's still better than nothing and since my preliminary investigations found that I can't afford any better, I'm psyched!

It's nice to actually receive benefits put in place by a politician. Way to go Obama! I may vote for you yet...

  • Thank heaven for the Affordable Care Act! A lot of bad things were said about it, and it may well have flaws, but it makes health insurance available to the indigent and to the difficult-to-insure. That alone is a huge blessing. It almost gives one hope, as far as insurance goes. Does this mean that Washington DC actually did something right?? :hrm: The thought is hard to get my mind around.

In Minnesota we have something called Minnesota Comprehensive Insurance. It's a mandate by the state that insurance be provided to people who get denied for normal insurance at %125 the standard rate. I'm self-employed and had an accident that made my premium jump by a lot and was denied for normal insurance. As a 38 year old male I pay $188 a month with a $5,000 deductible.

From what I hear from others throughout the country this is very reasonable. Also all our health insurance companies here have to be non-profit. So it is possible to provide people reasonable health care.

I don't have health insurance.
  • Isn't there a federal insurance program for kids, that's free? Is a 16-year old still a kid? wtf??!!!
  • Great news, @zombiegirl !
  • that is great news, I know that it is a huge stress to cover your own insruance. I used to be the treasurer on a swim team and our coaches ended up being uninsruable, it was really crazy. I looked and looked, even through coaching leagues I could not fine insurance. So I am glad for the affordable Health insurance deal, I may not be required to run for office some day to address this issue, whew, I don't like crowds

@person i didn't know that about minnesota. that's interesting though. it sounds as though your state has very similar policies to what obama is trying to do with the affordable care act.

i'm interested to see how all of this turns out since i know that the republicans are still trying to fight it. i will more than likely end up voting for obama in the next election to at least give him a better chance to do what he was trying to do.

The Republicans may as well shoot us now, instead of setting us up for a slow, agonizing death.

never! if that's the case, i'm going down fighting! they had better be prepared for a very long... passive... peaceful protest... that'll show 'em! ;)

and don't forget, i'm sure they'd like to...
