So me buddy reckons that my firewood piles are a bit dangerous because they are a bit ahh imbalanced :) Tis true too because when I took one out today the side edges fell down.

Anyway does anyone know if there is an art or science to stacking piles of firewood well?

Um after writing this, I googled it :aol: and found some good answers. In case anyone else is interested! here they are:

In my experience stack them against a wall or in multiple stacks next to each other.

Stack them between two trees? :p That is what we do.
  • Stacking it away from the house, like MG said, between two trees,or some other way, is best. Stacking it against the wall or in the garage can attract vermin who set up house in the stack. Firewood isn't as simple a thing to deal with as it seems.

Unless you're Swiss. In which case your firewood is PERFECTLY stacked. Each and every piece is straight as a sewer pipe, exactly the same length, and stacked so that a bug couldn't fit between the pieces. And this isn't just one example. Everywhere I went in Switzerland I saw this exact same wood pile. Apparently the Swiss only grow trees that are perfectly straight, have no knots, and split exactly evenly. Apparently also there is a law in Switzerland that all wood piles have to be geometrically stacked to very tight (Swiss watch) tolerances. And I thought we Germans were anal-retentive...

    :)

Ah! This way, the stacks are stable. I was envisioning something like this in my mind. If you live on firewood heat in the winter as your only source, you learn to do it efficiently. We tend to be clutzes at it because for most of us, firewood isn't a necessity.
