The Story of Broke!

http://bit.ly/storyofbroke — The United States isn't broke; we're the richest country on the planet and a country in which the richest among us are doing exceptionally well. But the truth is, our economy is broken, producing more pollution, greenhouse gasses and garbage than any other country. In these and so many other ways, it just isn't working. But rather than invest in something better, we continue to keep this 'dinosaur economy' on life support with hundreds of billions of dollars of our tax money. The Story of Broke calls for a shift in government spending toward investments in clean, green solutions—renewable energy, safer chemicals and materials, zero waste and more—that can deliver jobs AND a healthier environment. It's time to rebuild the American Dream; but this time, let's build it better.

These are so cool. But the military budget, the part that pays for the wars, doesn't come from taxes. It comes from debt.

This is all common sense. We know most of this stuff. But they're preaching to the choir. Who they need to convince are the corporations and Republicans.

The people voted the Republicans out when they voted for Gore. What good did that do? Same in the Bush-Kerry election. We now have a Democrat in the Presidency, but what's he achieved? He's not able to stand up to the Republicans. This film assumes that our election process isn't broken, and that there are politicians capable of real leadership who want to run for President, and who would win their party's nomination.
  • On a side note, I think we need a system in the US that gets 3rd parties into the power positions before we canexpect change. So methods like if a third party gets 1/3 of the vote in an area then they get some representation accordingly. Of course this is more complicated but as long as we are stuck to 2 parties then the voters are getting their voice watered down.
  • Wow, great video.

Maybe at some time we were the richest on the planet. Now that's a bunch of very out-dated propaganda. In fact, Sweden and Switzerland have always had a higher standard of living than the U.S. This isn't to say that we can't recover our economic strength, but it would take great leadership by people not beholden to corporate interests to bring that about.

Beware the next presidential election process. They system hasn't been fixed, in spite of many congressional investigations exposing various shenanigans on the part of the Republicans for cheating people out of their votes. There will have to be a massive turnout for the Democrats in order to win in spite of votes lost to faulty machines, Dem voters turned away at the polls, insufficient polling stations, etc.

If the people really want to raise their voice and have an impact, they should demand reliable voting machines and a remedy to polling issues.
