HE Khandro Rinpoche discusses issues within the Sangha

edited November 2011 in Philosophy
I think it is a very relevant discussion by HE Khandro Rinpoche about Hierarchy and preventing schims within the Samgha. I think many of her ideas can be applied to our political world and daily lives, and how we look at our world.

I really appreciated her comments on heirarchy, especially within the context of much of the hesitation expressed from some on this site regarding trusting a guru.

In regards to the second question about creating a schism. She talks about disagreements leading to a schism and creating a schism in the sangha as one of the 5 grave sins. I wonder though if a schism occuring as a result of disagreements is the same as deliberatly causing a schism in regards to the negative karma created. I'm not trying to say its not but normally intention is paramount in the type of karma created.
  • I think the essence of what she was trying to bring across in answering the second question is that we should look very carefully into our motivations and intentions, and weigh the consequences with the actions before putting forward our ideas.

While we may mean well in calling out on the faults of other sangha members or put forth ideas which might go against the current consensus of the sangha. It is the way we do it and the effect it has on all others around us which impacts the sangha.

No matter what, the breaking up of a sangha is never a positive thing. It can mean the loss of Dharma activities in the locale you are in, which can result in the decline of the Dharma in general. Therefore with your actions you can result in the loss of Dharma activities, which is unthinkable.
