Any of you medially minded or who know the human body well, what is this? On the right side and jus below the rib cage, not the back but front side. It is not my apendix as I have had this pain before many times going back a number of years. It has come back recently, just wondering if people on here may know what that area may be?..

    Liver, perhaps, or gall bladder?
  • I have heard that is an entry point for aliens. It can cause really itchy skin and a greenish tinge. Sometimes they take over and make us watch really bad comedy movies and eat excessive popcorn. It may just be an American thing (and I really hope you have a sense of humor so I wasn't just rude)

    gallstones, or blocked bile duct?
are the whites of your eyes yellowed?
    any weak or brittle nails?
  • That would be the liver! :-/
  • I have had a yellow colour around my pupil for years, probably for most of my life. This pain in that area has come and gone for maybe 4 years I guess. It would make sense to be the liver, it has not occurred much recently, but when it does it is when I am sitting down.
  • Ah yes, it seems to be the liver as it is not as far into my body from the right as the gall bladder. My nails are actually very hard by the way. But I guess it is the right tip if my liver.

    More likely gall bladder.
Unless - and there is no criticism here, veiled or otherwise, just observation - given that you have had a habit of substance abuse for some considerable period of time, and that the Liver is basically the body's dirty laundry site - you've finally overloaded the machine and now you have motor trouble......
  • That is why I think it is probably the liver. However, correct me if I am wrong, is the liver the only organ in the human body that can repair itself in the sense of growing back? I think I have heard that somewhere, I am not sure :-/
  • federicafederica Seeker of the clear blue sky... Its better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak out and remove all doubt Moderator
providing the liver is healthy to begin with.
if only part of the liver has sustained damage, the remaining portion - if it's perfectly healthy - can not only continue to function as well as a full liver can, but will regenerate.
If however, damage is widespread and generalised, there's no hope of regeneration.
Milk Thistle is an excellent liver cleanser.

but it goes without saying that you should also seek advice, if the condition continues, escalates or becomes more painful.
  • Thanks for the link, I was going to see if I could get some, but then it says that if you are taking meedication for anxiety such as xanax or valium you should not be taking milk thistle :(
  • federicafederica Seeker of the clear blue sky... Its better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak out and remove all doubt Moderator
Well....that may be part of the cause.....
Oh Tom, what are we going to do with you....? :-/ :(
  • I have had this pain on and off for four years, so I am not too worried about it to be honest. I just wanted to know what organ it was. And you can do nothing with me, only I can do something with me.
  • federicafederica Seeker of the clear blue sky... Its better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak out and remove all doubt Moderator
    Ain't that the truth.
I don't want this to end up into a reproach-thread, so I'll bow out.
But only you know what you must do with you.

    hugs, fellah.....
  • cheers :) I only seem to get the pain after sitting for a long period, and it is not often so... But it is a pain that makes you arch and is a pain hard to describe. Although it is very familiar as I have had it for around 4-5 years. If there is something wrong with my liver, I will look into really affective detox recipies. I heard cranberry juice was good?

sounds daft but - how much water do you drink per day?
  • I think some simple bloodwork will show if your liver is stressed...
  • I drink about a litre and a half of water a day. I never really feel like I am thirsty for water if you can understand, I almost have to make myself drink it because I know it is so important. It has been that way for a long time though, even in a climate like here.

1 1/2 liters is pretty good! I have the same problem, I never really feel like drinking.

  • When I first came to Thailand with my English friend we woul discuss this exact subject. I would forget to drink water sometimes and have to make myself drink a litre right off the bat, whereas he would guzzle down maybe 3 litres a day from a huge 5 litre bottle.

Because of the location, I too would suspect the gall bladder. One of the first symptoms is pain or tenderness under the rib cage on the right side.

  • Thanks for the link. It could be that or it could be the liver. I am not overweight, well slightly I am about 78kg and exactly 6 feet tall. But my digestive system in general is messed up. I have kind of exhausted it through partying too much in my teens. I am only young, so maybe it will rectify itself with less intoxicants. To be honest, my diet is pretty good, it always has been, but recently I have been eating a lot of seeds and grains, butterfly pea and lemon drink (which is one of the best tasting drinks I have ever had in my life).
  • Okay the past week has been bad with regards to this pain. It is more frequent recently and I will go with peoples opinion, it seems to be the gallbladder. If I do not see a doctor, what CAN be the outcome?

    removal.
If he diagnoses gallstones, let me know.
My mother had gallstones, and the doc recommended surgery.
she followed a special diet for 7 days, and passed them all, naturally, without the need to remove her gallbladder....
  • Hmmm, the thing is I am not too high up with moolah, and here I have no travel insurance, so such a thing would be very expensive. I guess I should see a doctor at least first, but I really do not trust the Thai doctors for the majority. That is not being racist, it is from experience. If I were to need surgery, I would head back to the Uk, get it for free and come back here. I will go to the doc if the pain persists. Thanks for the 411 federica.

By the way, can you let me know what the specific diet was your mother used, and did it hurt to pass gall bladder stones? Also, this is off beat, but I am curious to where you live in the UK?...

ok, here we go.... see attached.

and no, there is no pain, though she said that drinking the concoction isn't the world's most pleasing experience...it's uncomfortable, but not in a prolonged nasty way....

But hey, tom...you're a young guy. you've put your poor system through some nerve-wracking stuff - you need to ease up, and start looking after yourself, hun....

i live not as far north as Edinburgh, but not as far south as Brighton.... :p

Cleaning the Gall Bladder of Gallstones

This remedy comes directly from a surgeon specialising in Gall Bladder and Liver conditions. He works in a main hospital in Oxford, England, and he doesn’t care if this brings him less work, the relief of certain conditions is what counts, to him.

Drink one litre of fresh, pure, unfiltered and organic apple juice, per day. (This has the effect of softening the gallstones so efficiently, that their consistency goes from rock-hard, to wet-chalk soft, and you’ll be able to crush them between your fingers very easily). Follow a normal diet, but be sensible!

On the sixth day, don’t eat an evening meal.
At around 9.00pm, take 1 – 2 tablespoons of Bicarbonate of Soda, dissolved in a large glass of tepid water. (I know, it sounds revolting. Unfortunately, it is.)

At 10.00pm, mix 150ml (a half-cup) of extra-virgin, cold-pressed olive oil with half that amount (75ml) of freshly-squeezed lemon juice.
    Mix well, and drink.
    I kid you not.

    Go to bed, immediately.

Lie on your right side, with your legs drawn up as close to your chest as you can get them. If you can touch your chin, with your knees, so much the better.

Hold this position for as long as you can, but at least a half-hour. This enables the olive oil mixture to travel more quickly to the liver. You might need to drink a further smaller measure of bicarb and water, during the night, but this isn’t usual. Prepare it before retiring, to have it ready, just in case.
The following day – or even during the night – you will pass the gall-stones harmlessly through your system, without feeling a thing.

To help your system break down and absorb calcium more efficiently:
Take one glass of low-sodium mineral water:
Add two teaspoonsful of cider vinegar
    Two teaspoonsful of good honey.
Drink 3 times per day, with meals.

Cut down, eliminate or reduce the following diet items:

    • Bovine milk products. Replace with goat or sheep milk, cheeses and yoghurts. Try drinking soya or even rice milk.
    • Coffee. Go for a good coffee substitute, made with barley and or chicory.

The foods in the left-hand column are very difficult for the liver to process. Follow this regime, twice a year, to help cleanse and detox the liver.

LESS than 1/8th of a teaspoonful of salt PER DAY.

    *Nut Combo:
Take equal quantities BY VOLUME of almonds, sesame seeds, sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds. Add a level tablespoonful of linseeds. Blend them all in a food processor until they resemble a coarse powder, like ground coffee. Transfer to a ajr, store in the fridge, and put into salads, sprinkle into soya milk, or on fruit allowed.
I like to dip a bit of wholemeal bread into a drop of excellent Extra-virgin, cold-pressed olive oil, and then dip it into the nut mix powder, and eat.

This diet should be followed for one month. Then, begin introducing “forbidden” foods, twice a week, and gradually return to a normal, but balanced and healthy diet. Use the above foods more than the forbidden ones, and gradually your system will become healthier.

there's a list of foods to avoid and eliminate, and advised replacements.
but it's in table format, and won't copy across, so I'll give you that tonight when I get back home from work!
  • Thank you for the one month plan federica. It seems pretty radical. I do not have much of a problem with eating and drinking that stuff, I have eaten and drunk probably worse tasting stuff before. It is just a matter of getting it all sorted and keeping to it in a sctrict manner. That is if it is my gallbladder that is the problem.

I already eat sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds, but I do not have a fridge so the blending part will have to be missed out and I shall just simply eat them in the way I have been doing so now.
I never drink coffee, one reason is because it messes with my digestive system and the other is because I see too many people relying on it to get their day into order and start work. Plus it has withdrawl symptoms, I do not need anymore of them.

But thank you, that is quite a diet to follow through with as it requires pretty random items and measurments etc, but I will give it my best shot. I heard that it hurts like hell to pass a gallbladder stone though...
  • federicafederica Seeker of the clear blue sky... Its better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak out and remove all doubt Moderator
no, because the apple juice you've been drinking all week, renders them soft and of a crumbly, moist chalky consistency....
kidney stones on the other hand, are any man's worst nightmare, and all told, probably 10,000 times more painful than having a baby. they are real killers, and hurt like nothing ever has or ever will.

  • Thanks again federica. The only problems I have with that diet as of now is that in thailand most food is fried in a wock. I often however eat steamed rice with friced vegetables and lean chicken or pork. If I am not eating that, it is something called 'passa eel' which is frided noodles with fried vegetables. Also I often buy chicken and eat raw vegetables such as onion, carrot, lettuce, cucumber, and many vegetables you probably have never seen or heard of. I never eat chocolate anymore, mainly because I got bored of it and lost the appetite for it. Like I said I eat pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds regulary as it is, I never drink coffe or tea for that matter. I have stopped eating fruit recently though, but I would normally eat pineapple, mango and a red fruit they do not have in the west to my knowledge.

I guess I need to get my hands on some apple juice and soda, also olive oil. And most importantly, try my hardest to stay away from alcohol.
