What type of experiences have you had using sight, sound, touch or smell in a mindfulness meditation capacity? Mindfulness eating or walking might be two obvious examples, but there are others.

  • walking and eating. walking almost every day. eating raisins in a dharma teaching by jon kabat zinn, a guided meditation recording.

occasionally I do mindfulness of sound. Occasionally I do mindfulness of a candle flame for 10 minutes in a dark room. then blow it out and close eyes and mindful of the light in the eys.
  • As teens we practiced mindfulness walking through the city, eyes closed, with only a friend at one's side to warn of approaching dangers if one didn't pick up on them with one's own awareness in time. It is an extremely difficult practice.

I pick different objects for mindfullness to help me sharpen the skill. Anytime I see that object...I stop for a few moments and try to notice everything around it. For example, it might be birds. Stop if I see one walking into the store, or into work. Where is it going? Whats the bird about right now? Whats he pecking at? Or it might be road cones, the streetlight.

"Tagging" items means I need to be ready to stop when they appear. Stop, watch, listen and learn.
  • When experiencing Mindfulness Meditation through sound, it is best done with the eyes closed. While becoming aware of all surrounding sounds we eventually go deeper into a sub-sound that exists as a hum or a low ringing, like that of a large singing bowl.

When we reach this level of sound awareness we are engulfed by a calmness that is different from other types of Mindfulness Meditation. It takes a little extra time to come out of the serenity of this awareness.

The John Kabat-Zinn disc is very good. I have a copy as well. I also do sound , walking and eating too, I am very interested in trying the candle meditation you describe.
