Rethink your point of view with Intelligence Squared U.S. (IQ2US), Oxford-style debates live from New York City. Based on the highly successful debate program in London, Intelligence Squared, Intelligence Squared U.S. has presented 50 debates on a wide range of provocative and timely topics. From clean energy and the financial crisis, to the Middle East and the death of mainstream media, Intelligence Squared U.S. brings together the world’s leading authorities on the day’s most important issues.

Since its inception in 2006, the goals have been to provide a new forum for intelligent discussion, grounded in facts and informed by reasoned analysis; to transcend the toxically emotional and the reflexively ideological; and to encourage recognition that the opposing side has intellectually respectable views.

---

I really enjoy listening to these debates. They debates subjects such as 'the world would be better off without religion', 'men are finished', 'clean energy can drive America's economic recovery', and many others.

The debates are set up where a statement is proposed, then a team of 2 people on one side of the topic argue for the proposition and another team of 2 argue against it. The audience is polled beforehand for pro, con, and undecided. The structured debate happens. The audience is polled again and whichever side changes the most minds is declared the winner.

The poll results are on each debates main page so if you don't want to know be careful not to look. I usually listen to the audio but there is also video if you'd rather have that.

    Yes, I realise that. :)

Don't worry, it happens a lot...
  • I'll have to check this out. I've never heard of it. 'Men are Finished'? huh. Interesting....lol. I predicted that in the 90's. :)
  • I'll be interested to see how that pans out. The whole thing about 'facts' and 'reason' being required leaves me a little dubious, given the state of discourse in America right now.

I hear ya. IMO it really is a breath of fresh air. The debates are structured and moderated so they stay civil. Of course, each side is allowed to present its own view and perspective whether we all agree or disagree.
