Facing a Dystopian Future?

edited January 2012 in General Banter
Do you think a global crisis will happen within the next century? Even, the collapse of civilization?

Maybe I'm a cynic, and a conspiracy theorist, but I think there will be some sort of big change within the next 50 years. With the unstable global economy, oil peak occurring in 2020-2030, etc, it seems that this way of life can't and won't last forever.

  • If it's any thing like the changes in the last fifty years, I'm sorry I will not be here to witness it.
How did I live without my iPad last year?
Thirty five years ago I was stockpiling ammo and candles in preparation for the big crunch.lol
  • Next century, i am in the land of ultimate bliss and if living beings desires for liberation, i will be here for them. Civilization will only end if crop farming, tree and fruit tree ceases for mankind. Be cheers be love and be solace :D
  • Yes, worry, no. There are many things that are possible to occur on the cards, maybe it won't signal the end of civilisation, but one thing is certain, things won't be the same in 50 years from now.

It's the fear of our own death extrapolated that drives this globally... looking back, was there ever a period in recorded human history where the participants didnt expect a looming global crisis? In striving to establish our permanence, we create our own nemesis, ever looming - I think a global crisis is and always has been happening and will continue until we can personally accept that nothing is forever.

  • Yes, there will be huge changes ahead. One day. Eventually, no matter how much we wish it otherwise, a world civilization built on cheap fossil fuels will run out of fuel. The world cannot support billions of people all fighting for resources. Something will be built on the ruins and life will continue.

The history of humanity is a history of rebirth. The city-state gave way to nations, which gave way to empires. The ancient people who lived in their comfortable worlds where nothing changed for thousands of years also watched their world slowly crumble around them and despaired.

A thousand years from now, what will people say of our world spanning civilization built on cheap transportation and abundant resources? Will they learn any lessons about their own conduct? Considering our own talent to ignore the lessons of history, I suspect not.

I also feel that civilization is headed for a crash. There are so many looming crises that it will be tough for society to cope with. Theoretically the challenges can be met and dealt with, I feel though that the entrenched interests are too against the types of change needed for that to happen in a meaningful enough way. At some point situations get bad enough to overrule even those powerful interests, but will it be too late by then. Humans are hearty and resilient so I don't think its the end of the world or anything. Out of decline and destruction comes renewal and rebirth though so in the long run hopefully we can hang on to some of the knowledge and experience we've gained as a species and continue on in a better way.

As for peak oil, if the Canadian oil sands are fully developed there would be enough oil for 100 more years. Its more expensive and more damaging to the environment than traditional oil drilling so I'm not saying that its a good thing, just that there's lots of oil.

This is the problem. In our desperate bid to extend a destructive way of life, we're forced to wreak even more environmental havoc. Taken to its logical extreme, this scenario could result in urban areas surviving on their transfusion of fossil fuels, piped in from rural areas, while the rural areas become uninhabitable. So that when the final crash does come, there will be no opportunity to go back to the land and practice a subsistence lifestyle.Just what Bekenze wanted to hear--more apocalyptic scenarios.

The crux of the problem is that the corporations now run everything. They've become giant parasites feeding off of humanity and nature both. Through the WTO and buying off national governments, they're now fully in the driver's seat. Try to dislodge them.

I wonder if there could be nuclear reactors on the moon and some compact (energy/bulk) batteries manufactured?

It's definitely a good sign that education is increasing and population growth slowing drastically.

forget the economy, the wages bankers are drawing, the mess politicians are making and how much fuel costs.

If bees die out, so do we.

Anyways. Maybe I'm a sick person, but I sometimes fantasize about the end of civilization.... wondering what it'd be like.
  • What about space doom..
    Active sun...

Grim. Horrific. Even before it gets to that point, people are going to be fighting wars over water. Unless we starve because of bee issues first.

I think we need a cheery subject to envision, now. :p

I like apocalyptic fiction. I like it from the point of view of how people might give up all the superficial things that seperate us and pull together to survive. Also the 'what would I do' aspect of it. When I think about it from a real world perspective its scary because of all the suffering and negativity that would ensue.

This is the problem. We would think that each of us would be compassionate, and try to help, and work together with people. But humans, when they panic, become scary and full of negativity. Crises can bring out the best in people, but also the worst in some.

It depends. On individuals, change of mind/compassion/understanding and knowledge and so on. Really depends, things are always changing and will continue to change.

I totally agree with this beautiful and simple way of living! I vote for simplicity for all!:)
  • I often also play with the idea of the end of society and the world as we know it bekenze. I think a lot of people need a good shake up! Maybe then people would get their priorities straight, instead of worrying/complaining about mondays or their smartphone breaking, they will have to worry about gathering food and helping others!

  • Poaitive, it is a nice thought. There are few things that stand in the way, the people who run the show. Also, that guy just used up a whole lot of paper :p lol. Good cause however
  • Maybe it glitched but I got the eminem video "when I'm gone "
