A question of freedom for chimpanzees who spend lives in research labs

This segment from Rock Center focuses on the lives of research chimpanzees. The conditions these live in are far superior to the small dark cages of the past. Does that make this kind of research ok then?

  • :p I couldn't get past the 2nd paragraph.

Some people justify this sort of thing by saying that without animal research, humans would be still suffering all manner of diseases that have now been eliminated or controlled. (A version of the "Greater good" principle...)

Let's see what our members think.

I think humans should offer themselves as guinea pigs (or chimpanzees?)
After all, if the research is for human use, who better to do that research on?

I've volunteered for two medical research programmes, and was rejected for both, due to several mitigating factors, but research went ahead, as they had plenty of volunteers for them....
  • Both are karmic debtors between themselves due to past life animosity. Causing bodily and mental harm towards living beings are extremely bad karma. may all having this bad karmic realize bodhi and be liberated with love and peace
  • I think they should clone the scientists and let them experiment on their clone.

Yeah, they can do that now, can't they?

    Good point.....

To say that without animal research humans would still be suffering with all these diseases is not a logical conclusion. It's equivalent to saying that if you take the bus to work and you miss the bus, then you would never be able to get to work, which isn't reasonable.
