Zen Mountain Monastery-Mt. Tremper, NY (Is it worth going)

edited February 2012 in General Banter
Hello Everyone,

I am thinking about going on a retreat to the Zen Mountain Monastery. I was wondering if anyone has had the opportunity to attend, and what they thought about it.

Thanks for any info that you may have.

I like The Sacred Art of Eating with Jan Chozen Bays (Roshi). Only $350 to learn how to make a sacred art out of eating, and in only two days. That's a bargain if I've ever seen one!
  • @praxis But what does this have to do with the OP? Please explain.

Zen Mountain Monastery retreats and value for your money. What can I say, I'm a good consumer. :)
  • Never been there for one of their retreats, but I've heard only good things about them. Standard Zazen with additional activity and teaching for a complete experience. The Catskill mountains are beautiful. The cost is reasonable as far as these things go. Which of their retreats are you thinking of? The intro, or one of the special ones? If you do go, I'd love to hear about your experience.
  • I'm thinking about taking a leave of absence and joining their residence program. I think a year at any place like this will be very good for me. I have not followed Zen Buddhism. I believe that all Buddhism is accurate though as long as you follow the basic "guidelines". Based on what I have read I can see this place as a good fit.
I would love to drop everything and leave right now, but that will be difficult. Many people are relying on me at the moment. I'm hoping to be able to do this in about a year. So, if I end up at Zen Mountain I will let you know how it goes.

I've sent a couple of people who came to sit here to ZMM sesshins. They returned in one piece as far as I could see. :)

I still don't see what a book recommendation has to do with the OP.

    I don't either.

  • I like to take my tent, go into the woods and sit. Cost- next to nothing.

@Dakini -- this event/retreat (The Sacred Art of Eating with Jan Chozen Bays (Roshi) for $350) is offered at the Monastery. It's listed on the website on the Retreat Calendar.
  • Yay! Thank you, possibilities! I looked up the Roshi to see if there was a connection, but that wasn't it. Couldn't figure it out.
