Training for my first half marathon.

edited February 2012 in General Banter
Namaste All,

In about a month, I am going to begin training for a half marathon. I have yet to run the full distance of a half marathon, but have run 10 miles before. I also run 5ks every other day, but have zero experience with distance running. I've looked for information online, but am seeking someone's personal advice and experience in regards to a training regimen and diet. Any help or advice will be greatly appreciated

Metta,

  • I wish you good luck with that, a lot of running long distances is a mental game as well. I have a friend back in the UK who did not train for the Bath half marathon and he has been smoking since the age of 13-14 and he managed it somehow. He really do not know how he did that. Let us know how it goes, Tom :)
  • Thanks, Tom! Will keep you updated! I know what you mean when it comes to being in disbelief regarding how "in shape" some people are without even training for events such as this. Which leads me to believe that some people, are built JUST right for certain activities/tasks. Anyhow, I will keep you posted!
  • Hi Dharma,

I run ultramarathons these days and was happy to break the 100km mark in the 12hr race I ran two weekends ago :)

I wont give you much advice other than run slower during your long training runs. Your first goal should be to arrive at the starting line fit and healthy and you cant do that with an injury. Running slow has allowed me to go further and further and provides lots of time for meditation "on the run" lol

There are lots of online resources to help you prepare your own training plans or to get involved in discussions. Here are just a few:
    marathontalk.com
    runnersworld.com
    coolrunning.com (.au in Australia)

I have many more aimed at ultrarunning if you are interested!

    Good luck and enjoy!

I see this a lot on guys only...and don't wear cotton, op.

Vaseline for chaffing also help....don't ask!
  • Hahaha! :P such great advice from everyone. I'm definitely going to put those websites to good use. I am also a pretty slow runner as I don't typically run for time, just to see if I can complete the distance.

Also, I will definitely not forget to not wear cotton. Haha! Not so sure about taping my nipples, though. I normally don't run with a shirt because it cooler, but I just may go ahead and tape them anyway.
  • You might want to look into some Virbam shoes. Those goofy looking 5-toed water-shoe like slippers. They're actually phenomenal for running once you accustom your feet to them. Strengthen your shins and ankles and prevent shin splints. Great for run training.

I do a lot of running myself. Run a lot of hills up and down, which will strengthen your endurance.
