This man is awesome! Thank you!
You're welcome. Glad to be of help :)

Keep it in mind; do what you love doing. It's your life. Money is not important. :)
Or as my professor said once to me; if you do what you like, you're rich.

    With metta,
    Sabre

How true is that!:) However, I do need to put on the table. Lol. But totally agree with you! I should just try my hardest to get into nuclear science/engineering. Lol!

You can get the counseling degree with a minor in holistic. Then, once you have your degree, you'll be required to take a certain number of Continuing Education credits to maintain your license. You can use that opportunity to seek out Child Psych classes, Transpersonal Psych classes, etc. So you get the basic degree that'll let you do basic counseling, but you can diversify, building on the basic degree, see?

When an economy contracts, it's an employer's market, they can be as choosy as they want, so they end up requiring a BA for unskilled work, an MA for formerly BA-level work, and so on. The job requirements inflate.

Wow! Great idea! You think it's worth paying about $40,000 for my Masters in Counseling? These will all be loans. However, I intend to find a way to get scholarships, stipends, grants and maybe private donations/sponsors? Perhaps, by writing a book that has some type of meaning. Maybe...a book on Dharma? :) In a fiction type of setting.

Look for schools that offer scholarships. Contact the JFK admissions office. There are lots of colleges and universities around the Bay Area, start doing some online research. hm...maybe you could hold a fundraiser of some sort at your Russian or Uke community center?? Gotta brainstorm.

Those are beautiful ideas! Thank you so much! I am Jewish/Ukrainian/Russian. Maybe I can focus on the Jews? Lol. I really like the way JFK is set up though.

If you get your mom and others to cook for a fundraiser dinner with Jewish and Slavic food and desserts, I will come. :) I love that stuff! Save the stuffed cabbage rolls for me! Ha--you can hold Jewish and Slavic bake sales! OMG!! TOTALLY irresistible! You could go into business!

  • DaltheJigsawDaltheJigsaw Mountain View Veteran
Haha! I can cook some stuff for you and mail it to you! Where do you live?

  • Consistent work experience, of any stripe, will in my opinion get you farther and prepare you better for a career than spending 4 years in an intellectually straight-jacketed university being droned to by people not even working in the private sector.

Wow! Those words ring so true! Not only experience, but dedication and being persistent as well. That is why I am hesitant about my Masters, might as well get my BS in Psychology in 8 months and just focus on getting my experience, by working up the scale.

  • DakiniDakini Veteran
There's certainly merit to getting job experience. But it's harder to work up the scale these days than it used to be. And in the current economy, employers, if they're hiring, are hiring MA's for BA jobs, and BA's for highschool degree jobs. But there's no harm in testing the job mkt, you can always do grad school a year or two later. Traditionally, in a down economy, people stay in school, kind of waiting it out while they get more education.

In the meantime, while you weigh and consider all this, @Leon, you can look into some internships in something related to your field.

That's exactly what I'm thinking. The problem here is I am getting older. I am about to turn 27 in April. I live with my girlfriend and we want to get married in a few years and have kids in a few more years. I need to build a nest egg and have some kind of career going. However, due to economy and many other factors, it will definitely be difficult. I do intend to find internships/work part-time in my field when I graduate. Will be a difficult and fun journey.

ooh. I see. Tough decisions, no? Tough economic climate. Well, you were jazzed on JFK a couple of days ago, have you checked them out to see if they offer scholarships? It seems like the availability of scholarships is what's going to make or break your wish to get more education.

Yea, I have checked them out before, but the scholarship will not cover much. If I remember correctly, they mentioned a few thousand for one or two years. Too bad the cost is around $40,000 if not more. But that would mean I would have to go full-time. I cannot do that, as I need to work. I asked if I could do both, but they mentioned that it is not even in question. I even asked if I could do part-time, they mentioned perhaps and that would depend on the part-time job. But ... I suppose will see what happens when I graduate this year. Will see where the trends are and how the economy is doing. The reason for such high prices is because JFK is private. I can try to get into San Jose State, but out of 500 people every year they choose only 50. Plus, instead of 2 years, it is now 3 years. Therefore, more cost is involved. Lol. It's such a cycle.

That's really difficult. State schools not only have scholarships, they have work-study programs, too. But I don't know about the CA schools--the state is so chronically broke, I don't know if their financial aid programs are tight, too.

The future feels very uncertain, doesn't it? :(

Yea, it's pretty scary. Remember...California is broke like no other state.
  • Not to mention a bad actor playing a governor.

Too bad Arnold is not the Governor any longer. Lol. He hasn't been for a while.

Not any more. Now it's an ex-Zen monk. But I hear he's doing a good job.

In the 1950's he studied to be a Jesuit priest, and in the 80's he went to Japan and studied Zen. It looks like, officially, he was a Jesuit monk at one time, but just a student of Zen, not a monk. But he's referred to in some sources as a " former Christian-Zen monk".

Early in his career, when he was CA state attorney general, he sued and won against Standard Oil of California, AT&T, Gulf Oil and Mobil for election law violations He's a go-getter! :)

The one thing I can only remember my dad ever saying to me in my entire life that was of any real help is this. "son, I don't care what you end up doing, if it is sweeping the roads or cleaning toilets, as long as you are happy that is what matters."

This is the problem I have with society, chasing these careers and money, power or status, it does not lead to true happiness or liberation shall I say, but yes like sabre said, do whatever makes you happy Leon.
